Recap: What does Augustine believe about human nature?
TASK: complete the following questions in your notes to help recap Augustine’s beliefs about human nature: Blameless, without fault. Had free will. Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam and Eve were sent away from the Garden of Eden and were now separate from God. They had gained Original Sin, which is present in all humans as they are seminally present in Adam. Each person is flawed and born with sin. They have an inclination to do evil.
6
Free will as part of human nature.
Key Terms: Inclination or innate tendency of human beings to commit sin. Concupiscence was not sin in itself, but a deprivation of good or a wounding of the ability to choose good and resist evil. Concupiscence Humanity as a ‘lump of sin’. We are incapable of achieving salvation by ourselves due to our sinful nature. Massa Peccati Liberium abitrium Free will as part of human nature.

How does Augustine link human nature to salvation and predestination?
Foreknowledge: God merely chose those human beings who he knew would freely believe in him. Foreknowledge is not the same as compelling someone. Adam and Eve rebelled due to concupiscence We have Original sin and cannot abstain from committing sin on our own.
11
How does Augustine link human nature to salvation and predestination?
This inability to abstain from sin is our second nature. We have lost our moral liberty/freedom. God’s inscrutable free choice, not ours. A such, we are judged in readiness for the afterlife not on our merit but on His grace (gratia). Elect.
12
How does Augustine link human nature to salvation and predestination?
Irresistible grace. Go to Hell God’s just nature – through damnation and God’s mercy – through salvation. We were free only to sin so any pure behaviour is evidence of God’s grace. God elects some to be saved and some to be damned.
13
How does Augustine link human nature to salvation and predestination?
God’s foreknowledge not his choices. We are still sinners, deserving of being damned.
