Shinto Japanese Buddhism Ancient religion from Japan Originated from ancient Chinese inscriptions Came from India and the teachings of Siddhartha Guatama Originated from thoughts and teachings of Buddha

Shinto Japanese Buddhism Religious actions and rites are important Worships the forces of nature, polytheism, and animism (belief in spirits that are outside the body) Belief in kami (nature spirits) Does not include a theory of salvation Words and preaching of Buddha are important Follows an ethical code of conduct as a lifestyle Practices meditation Includes a theory of salvation

Shinto Japanese Buddhism Enter through a torri gate Uses the suffix jingu in its name A pair of guardian dogs or lions often sit on each side of the front entrance. A purification fountain is often near the front entrance so you can cleanse your mouth and hands before prayer. Often includes a pagoda Uses the suffix ji in their name Always has an image of the Buddha A large incense burner is usually near the front of the temple. The smoke created by burning incense is said to have healing powers.

7 Shintoism The word “Shinto” means “way of the spirits.”
Shinto later became linked to Japan’s rulers. The practice of Shinto affects the Japanese people today through their love of nature, and their striving for simplicity, cleanliness, and good manners.
