Network Hardware Types Network Protocols Network Adapters MCS-Magnum Communication MicroMag Communication Example Network Configurations
3
Network Hardware Types
Three network hardware types that are used in MCS products: RS485 Ethernet LonWorks (twisted pair)
4
RS485 Hardware One twisted pair (two conductors)
Shielded wire – wrapped foil with drain wire Minimum AWG 20 Max baud rate: 115,000 bit/s Multidrop – point to point Max 30 MCS Controllers wired together Total Network cable length < 4000’ (1219m) Can be lengthened with a repeater Supported Data Format Start bit: 1 bit Data bits: 8 bits Parity: None Stop bits:
5
Ethernet Hardware Star topography 4 twisted pairs (8 conductors) CAT5E
Max baud rate: 10 Mbit/s Max cable length < 328’ (100m) Can be lengthened with a switch
6
LonWorks Hardware One twisted pair (two conductors) Shielded wire
Free topography Minimum AWG 20 Total Network cable length < 3280’ (1000m) Can be lengthened with a repeater
7
Network Protocols Network protocols are formatting rules that specify how data is sent and received between devices. Protocols are necessary for devices to interact with each other. Protocols MCS controllers support: Bacnet Modbus LonTalk Johnson N2 MCS
8
Network Protocols The MCS Controllers support the following network protocols: Over Ethernet Over RS485 Over LonWorks
9
MCS Network Adaptors MCS uses different optional network adapters:
Hardware Adapters MCS-Ethernet (Ethernet – RS485) MCS-I/O (RS485) Hardware & Protocol Adapters MCS-BMS-Gateway (Bacnet MSTP, LonTalk, Johnson N2) MCS-Bacnet-Router2 (Bacnet IP)
10
MCS-BMS-Gateway Converts Bacnet MSTP (RS485) to: LonTalk (LonWorks)
Johnson N2 (RS485) Converts Bacnet IP (Ethernet) to: Bacnet MSTP (RS485) Only supports one MCS-Magnum or MicroMag Can be powered from MCS Controller RS485 Johnson N2 Bacnet MSTP Or MCS-Magnum Ethernet Bacnet IP MCS-BMS-Gateway LonWorks LonTalk RS485 Johnson N2 MicroMag RS485 Bacnet MSTP MCS-BMS-Gateway Or LonWorks LonTalk
11
MCS-Bacnet-Router2 Converts Bacnet MSTP (RS485) to Bacnet IP (Ethernet) Supports up to 30 MicroMags Can be powered from MicroMag Ethernet Bacnet IP MicroMag RS485 Bacnet MSTP MCS-Bacnet-Router2

MCS-WIRELESS-4G Broadband Router with Integrated Verizon 4G Modem
(Only for use in USA) The MCS-WIRELESS-4G is built for your network The router features a built-in high-speed Verizon 4G EVDO modem. Supplied with one year subscription to MCS Wireless Verizon Data Plan, 250MB per month. The MCS-WIRELESS-4G is a powerful tool that is especially useful in locations where there is no readily available internet connection. Combined with the data plan, the MCS-WIRELESS-4G may be used to wirelessly connect to the MCS-MAGNUM wherever a cellular signal is found. You will receive everything you need to setup communication with an MCS Controller. NOTE: The MCS-WIRELESS-4G can be used to communicate with multiple MSC Controllers. for more information.

MCS-Magnum Communication
The MCS-Magnum comes with two hardware communication ports: RS485 Port Ethernet Port
15
MCS-Magnum Communication
The MCS-MAGNUM-DOOR-NEMA4 Keypad has been sealed in its own frame using a new Gasket (BISCO HT-800 Medium Cellular Silicone). The RS485 port has been added to the back of the Keypad. Moving the communicating port to the back, adding the new gasket, provides the unit with a NEMA4 rating. Operating Temperature -4°F to +158°F (-20°C to +70°C) Keypad showing New design, adding RS-485 connection New Gasket Provides the unit with a NEMA4 rating RS485 port on the MCS-Magnum
16
MCS –USB-RS485 The MCS-USB-RS485 is a USB to RS485 level serial cable that provides a fast simple way to connect your computer to MCS controllers, MCS-MAGNUM and MICROMAG. The MCS-USB-RS485 cable contains a small internal electronic circuit board, utilizing the FT232R, which is encapsulated into the USB connector end of the cable. Each cable supports the FTDIChip-ID™ and is equipped with a unique USB serial number programmed into the FT232R. MCS-USB-RS485 MCS-MAGNUM PC (MCS-Connect) MicroMag

MCS-Magnum RS485 Building Management System
Using the RS485, the MCS-Magnum can be connected to the BMS (Modbus RTU or MCS 485 protocols) MCS-MAGNUMS Building Management System . RS485
18
Wiring Multiple MCS Controllers
Using the RS485, the network must be wired controller to controller Star configurations not allowed Up to 30 controllers can be wired together Correct Incorrect MCS-MAGNUM MicroMag . MCS-MAGNUM
19
MCS-Magnum Ethernet Using the Ethernet, the MCS-Magnum can be connected to: BMS (Bacnet IP or Modbus IP) MCS-Touchscreen (MCS-Connect) PC (MCS-Connect) Internet access through router (which allows connection via MCS-Connect from anywhere) Or MCS-MAGNUM Or Or Ethernet
20
MicroMag Communication
The MicroMag comes standard with two independent RS485 ports: Ethernet access can be added with the MCS-Ethernet RS485 Port
