3
Metric System Called the SI (International System of Units)
Used by scientists and most of the world Based on multiples of 10
4
Prefixes prefix symbol meaning kilo k 1,000 or 103 hecto h 100 or 102
deka da basic units g,L,m 1 deci d or 1/10 centi c or 1/100 or 10-2 milli m or 1/1,000 or 10-3
5
Converting Metric Units
6493 m to km k stand for kilo which means 1000 6.493 km Which is thousand meters or 6493 m
6
Converting prefix to prefix
57 dg to hg 57dg 0.1g 1hg dg 100g 0.057 hg
7
Why should I do it that way?
When learning a new method, it is best to try it out on something simple. If you know how to move the decimal to convert between metric units, you can use that to check your work and make sure that you are doing the method correctly! How many seconds are there is 2.5 decades?
8
Converting prefix to prefix
0.63 daL to cL 630 cL
9
Converting prefix to prefix
hm to mm 836 mm
10
Length Distance from one point to another Basic unit is the meter, m
11
IPC-Lab. Equipment & Safety
Length Instrument – ruler, meterstick, calipers Based on the speed of light Record all marked decimal places and then estimate the next decimal place. For use that is usually 2 places
12
Volume Amount of space something takes up
Basic unit is the cubic meter, m3
13
Liquid Volume Measured in Liters, L 1 mL = 1 cm3
14
Liquid Volume Instrument – graduated cylinder
Readings are one place after the decimal point for our 100 mL graduated cylinders, 2 for our 10 mL
15
Solid Volume Regular Shape Equation V= l x w x h (rectangular)
Instrument – ruler Units – cm3
16
Solid Volume Example 1 What is the volume of a rectangular solid of the width is 4 cm, the height is 2 cm and the length is 7 cm?
17
Solid Volume Irregular Shape Method is called Water Displacement
Instrument – graduated cylinder
18
Solid Volume Irregular Shape
V = mL of grad. with object – mL of grad w/o object
19
Solid Volume Example 2: The volume of water in a graduated cylinder is 45.3mL. A fishing weight is slowly lowered into the grad. to prevent splashing. The new volume of the graduated cylinder is 69.7mL. What is the volume of the fishing weight?
20
Solid Volume Example 3: A large rock is lowered into an overflow can. The water that flows out of the spout is collected in a graduated cylinder and the reading is 69.8 mL. What is the volume of the rock?
21
Mass Amount of matter in an object Basic unit – kilogram
Instrument – balance
22
Mass Based on a sample of platinum and iridium
Readings are two places after the decimal point
23
Temperature How hot or cold a substance is
Average kinetic energy of an object Unit is Celsius
24
Temperature Instrument - thermometer
Based on boiling point (100oC) and freezing point (0oC) of water Readings are one place after the decimal point
25
Time Particular moment or the interval between two events
SI unit is seconds
