2 "grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord"
2 Peter 3:18 A religious survey would quickly show most people believe, practice and teach things not found in the Bible. Jesus often dealt with false teachers and false teaching: Matt. 22:23-33; 15:14 To recognize and deal with religious error we must study God’s Word! 2 Tim. 2:15; Eph. 4:14 Error comes from all directions and never ceases! Acts 20:29-30; 2 Cor. 10:3-5; Rom. 16:17-18; Judges 2:10-11 The Bible is the ONLY standard! Psa. 119:105; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 1 Pet. 4:11; Col. 3:17; Rom. 4:3

3 Ye Do Err Different Religious Names of No Consequence Premillennialism
“…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Mt. 22:29 Different Religious Names of No Consequence Premillennialism Miracles and Spiritual Gifts Observing Special Religious Holidays Use of Religious Titles Baptism Is Not Essential to Being Saved

4 1. Different religious names are of no consequence
Ye Do Err “…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 1. Different religious names are of no consequence In “Christendom” hundreds of different names are used to identify the church and its members. Most say, “What’s in a name? It doesn’t matter?” Those believing that “do err, not knowing the scriptures.” A “name” means a lot! It certainly does in the scriptures! Abraham, Jerusalem, Jesus, Immanuel, etc. The Lord’s church and His people should wear names He has given: 1 Cor. 2:9-13; Acts 20:28; Rom. 16:16; Acts 11:26 The Bible condemns wearing man-made names instead of Christ’s name: 1 Cor. 1:10-13; 1 Pet. 4:11

5 Ye Do Err 2. Premillennialism
“…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 2. Premillennialism Almost every denomination believes in some form of premillennialism. Common elements of most flavors of premillennialism: Christ’s return is imminent: 2 Pet. 3:10 Jesus secretly returns and “raptures” the saints: Matt. 24; Rev. 1:7 Then seven years of the “Great Tribulation”: Matt.24 Then Jesus returns, defeats Satan (battle of Armageddon): 1 Thess. 4:17 Jesus rules a utopian Earth on God’s throne in Jerusalem for 1,000 years: Col. 1:13 Final judgment: Rev. 20:11-15

6 Ye Do Err 2. Premillennialism
“…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 2. Premillennialism Those believing in any flavor of premillennialism “do err, not knowing the scriptures.” Premillennialism is mistaken, the kingdom is not future: Rev. 1:9; Matt. 16:18-19; Mk. 9:1; Acts 2:47; Col. 1:13 Christ’s kingdom is spiritual, not material: Jn. 18:36; Lk. 17:20-21; Acts 1:6 Premillennialism is mistaken about Christ’s second coming: Mk. 13:32; 2 Pet. 3:10 When Christ comes again, judgment will take place and all will go to either heaven or hell: Matt. 25:31-34; 41, 46; 2 Thess. 1:7-10

7 3. Miracles and spiritual gifts
Ye Do Err “…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 3. Miracles and spiritual gifts Some believe God is still working miracles and bestowing spiritual gifts as in the first century: Mk. 16:17; 1 Cor. 12:1-11 Those believing so “do err, not knowing the scriptures.” They don’t understand the purpose of miracles: Miracles confirmed the Word preached was from God: Mk. 16:15-20; Heb. 2:3-4; Phil. 2:25-27 Spiritual gifts were to guide the church: 1 Cor. 14:12; Acts 8:5, 12, 14-18 Both were temporary until revelation of NT completed: Cor. 13:8-10; Jas. 1:25; Jude 3

8 4. Observe special religious holidays
Ye Do Err “…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 4. Observe special religious holidays Almost all denominations celebrate religious holidays (e.g., Christmas, Easter). Those doing so “do err, not knowing the scriptures.” The church must only worship as instructed by Christ: Matt. 15:9; 1 Cor. 11:23-26; Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:1-2; Acts 2:42; Eph. 5:19 Check out this week’s Words of Life: our only religious “holy day” is the first day of the week. Don’t doubt it: The Bible very specifically condemns the observance of “holy days”: Gal. 4:10-11

9 5. Use of religious titles
Ye Do Err “…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 5. Use of religious titles Most denominations love the use of titles (e.g., Pastor, Bishop, Father, etc.). Those doing so “do err, not knowing the scriptures.” The terms “bishop” and “pastor” refer to elders, not preachers! 1 Pet. 5:1-2; Acts 20:17, 28 The term “reverend” is found only one time in the Bible and refers to God, not man! Psa. 111:9 No “clergy-laity” distinction in the Bible: Matt. 23:8-10 God does not approve of such “titles”: Job 32:21-22

10 6. Baptism not essential to salvation
Ye Do Err “…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 6. Baptism not essential to salvation Many perform “baptism” but don’t believe it’s necessary to salvation: merely “an outward sign of an inward grace.” Those doing so “do err, not knowing the scriptures.” Many things are necessary for salvation, including baptism: Mk. 16:16 (cf. Matt. 19:21); Gal. 3:27; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Rom. 6:3-6, 17-18; 1 Pet. 3:21 Baptism is the culminating step that puts one in the “body of Christ”: 1 Cor. 12:13; Acts 2:37-38, 41, 47 Denominational baptism is invalid: One must understand what he/she is doing for baptized to have God’s intended effect.

11 Ye Do Err “…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 Conclusion We must learn to not just swallow everything we hear some preacher or church say (1 Jn. 4:1; 1 Pet. 4:11). If we follow religious error, we will be lost by disobeying God! 2 Thess. 2:10-12

12 Ye Do Err “…Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures…” Matt. 22:29 Conclusion Let us continually check our beliefs by the word of God (Acts 17:11) to insure they are in agreement so we may be kept from error. Let diligently study God’s word so we are able to discern truth from error (2 Tim. 2:15).
