Introducing the Counter Argument and Rebuttal Make sure to take notes on any info that has this next to it!!

2 What is an Argumentative Essay?
The purpose of an argumentative essay is to persuade the reader to accept—or seriously consider--your opinion on a controversial issue Has 3 main parts: Claim, Counter Claim, Rebuttal

3 Consider your Audience
Whom are you trying to reach? What do they already know about your topic? What is your relationship with your audience and how does it impact your word choice and tone?

4 CLAIM and Evidence Your opinion or position on an issue, stated as a fact. Must be supported with evidence (quotes, facts, data) Evidence must be explained How can a RACE paragraph = Claim?

5 COUNTER CLAIM Consider the opposite side
What could someone say against your claim? Tell why someone might disagree with your argument… …then turn back to reaffirm your position

6 REBUTTAL Turn back to your original position
Responds to and refutes issues presented by the counterclaim

7 EXAMPLE CLAIM: “More Americans are choosing low-carb diets because TV commercials promote low-carb diets as the new way to a skinnier body.” COUNTER CLAIM:“Some Americans don't watch television commercials because they own a DVR or Tivo, REBUTTAL: but most Americans are exposed to other forms of advertisement in magazines, newspapers, and highway billboards.”

8 How to think of a counterclaim
Ask these questions: 1. Who might disagree with my position? Why? 2. What reasons do people have for disagreeing with me? 3. What evidence would support an opposing argument?

9 Counter Claim Key phrases to use: One might object that...
It might seem that... It's true that... Admittedly... Of course...

10 Return to your original argument based upon careful reasoning
REBUTTAL Return to your original argument based upon careful reasoning Refute the counterclaim: Show why it is wrong. Acknowledge it, but show why it is less important or off topic.

12 Counter Claim & Rebuttal Conclusion
Where to put it? Introduction & Claim Reasons & Evidence Counter Claim & Rebuttal Conclusion Each of these will be 1 paragraph or more!

13 It is true that counter arguments enrich argumentative writing
Be Cautious! It is true that counter arguments enrich argumentative writing However adding a weak counterargument or overdoing it causes worse results

14 Practice: Talk to your shoulder partner: Provide a Claim and 1 supporting evidence from the story. Your claim should be stated as fact! The princess chose to give her lover to the… Your evidence must be cited & explained: In paragraph #? It says… This shows…

15 Practice: Talk to your shoulder partner: Provide a Claim and Counter Argument for 1 of the following topics: 1. Do school dress codes limit freedom of expression? 2. Since it affects health, should the government regulate how much soda people can drink?
