The Interim Role: Invaluable lessons learned in leadership, professional development, and career advancement Grant Bigman, Duke University Katie Colleran, Duke University Stefanie Norris, University of North Carolina-Wilmington Dr. David Pittman, Duke University Dr. Jim Settle, University of North Carolina-Greensboro Monday, March 5, Salon H-Marriot Downtown

2 Introductions and Outcomes -Gain knowledge on sense-making as a process when considering an interim role -Increase awareness about the potential pitfalls and political nuances encountered within the interim role -Develop a set of key questions to consider when considering an interim role -Participants will reflect on and identify opportunities for leadership learning and career development We will each introduce ourselves with the benefit we shared. Stefanie-easing out of my current role rather than abruptly transitioning. I think this allowed for the students I worked with and the office in general to have some consistency. David-I learned about two new functional areas of Student Affairs, gained new insights into campus politics, and managed two departments during a period of transition and change. Katie-by holding the interim role for a year, I was more likely to be qualified/considered for the job when it opened as a full-time position. Grant-Getting the chance to work with someone with a fresh perspective (in an otherwise stagnant office environment) Jim-Change: If you’re in an interim role and know there are opportunities to make change which will help the full-time incumbent coming in, you have a real chance to implement change which can propel a department, office, program, or activity forward.

3 Theory to Practice Sense-making, giving meaning to collective experiences. Interim leaders demonstrate 5 distinct sense-making processes (Browning, B. & McNamee, L.G., 2012): Dutiful Traditional Aspiring Self-Conscious Restrained Grant does this. Figure out how to pronounce Weick. Then have them pair up to discuss their own questions before we show them ours

4 Questions to Consider What would my job options be if I was not successful as the internal candidate? What responsibilities can I ask/negotiate taking on? How will I be compensated for this? How long will my interim role last/is there an end date? How much of a commitment will I make to relationship building with someone who may only be in their Interim role a short time? How much of a commitment will I make to teaching this individual about my functional areas if they may not remain in the position full-time? If you’re an interim and you remain at the institution afterwards, how will the role develop or change your relationships with others at the institution? Given the opportunity to make change, to learn, to help students, and to develop professionally, what is the cost/value ratio in still doing two jobs? Is it worth it to work 100 hours a week for a few months or not?  Do I really have a choice?  What are the political implications for me if I were to say "no"? How will I connect with both staff and students in a way which is both meaningful and intentional to bring about change? In order: Stefanie, Katie, Grant, Jim, David
