(Alyssa)’s Career Path
How to become a Zoologist
2
My Career Goals I want to become a Zoologist by 2034.
Graduate high school with my dogwood diploma by June, 2020. Graduate high school with an average of 85% in required courses by June, 2020. Get into my choice university, UBC by September, 2021. Major in biology, environmental sciences, and chemistry while attending UBC. Graduate from University, and receive a bachelor’s degree in zoology by June, 2025. Consider taking extra years at UBC, to qualify for a masters degree in zoology by June, 2028. Start researching, apply for jobs/internships, volunteer, and make sure my resume and cover letter are ready for qualifications. To get there, I will need to: My Career Goals

A zoologist studies and researches wildlife
A zoologist studies and researches wildlife. Zoologists use data and research to increase our knowledge on species, adaptations and how everything works in the environment. Zoologists also work with public organizations and communities to develop and increase wildlife management that protect species from threats. Working as a zoologist includes: Researching and collecting data from different species of wildlife. Communicating and collaborating with other wildlife management organizations to help save the endangered habitats. Working in labs and offices figuring out how certain species live and adapt in the environment. What is a zoologist?
4
About my future career This job will be done in an office, lab, or research center, differing on what area of wildlife we will be focusing on. The salary range in BC for this job is $35,995 – $104,877. Zoologists work a 40-hour or longer work week. Usual hours for this job would be 8h/per day starting at 10am, and ending at 6pm.
5
My job has a 6.1% chance of becoming automated
I think this job will eventually become automated because: Computers can find and analyze research and data more than a person can at a faster and easier rate, making the job more productive for the zoologist. Technology has been increasing over the years, and special devices could be used to start tracking species and how they react and interact with the environment. An example of this has already been made. It’s called the “Big 5 Tracker.”
6
My compatibility I am 77% compatible with this job.
The skills this job requires are: - Critical Thinking - Communication - Problem Solving - Public Speaking - Cooperation - Teamwork - Determination - Leadership My compatibility
7
Zoology would be great for me because…
I already have these skills for this career: Problem-solving Writing Communicating Leadership skills Computer skills
8
I am not quite ready for this career, but I will get there!
These are skills for the job I still need to learn: - Public Speaking Memorizing data This is how I will get those necessary skills: - Start talking in front of a small group at first, and then working my way up to larger groups. - Keep reviewing the data analysis repetitively until I know the criteria.
9
Job Outlook In BC, the job outlook is 2 of 3 stars.
Here are 2 reasons why: There will be employment growth which will lead to a moderate number of new positions. Not many positions will become available due to retirements.
10
This is what appeals to me with this career…
You study, research, and take care of multiple species of animals throughout your career. You get to communicate and work with others, there is a lot of team work involved. You use technology and devices for work, I love dealing with different digital aspects.
11
These are some things I find less appealing about this career…
Throughout my career, I will have to use different math solutions to figure out data and analysis. When we discover new facts, I will have to do a lot of public speaking at conferences and events. While I’m tracking/researching, I might have to deal with animals of discomfort or ones that are wounded/hurt.
12
Potential obstacles to getting this career
The possible obstacles: - Not doing very well in my math courses throughout secondary school - Not having general admission into preferred University - Unable to meet tuition/rent requirements My plan to overcome them: - To get better in math, I will find a tutor for additional help and review/study every night. - I will start looking into scholarships and learn how to receive them. - I can work at a part-time job to pay off my tuition/rent.
13
Potential obstacles to being successful within this career
The possible obstacles: - Not being able to understand certain problems within the data - Having a difficult time researching independently - Having to speak to a larger amount of people My plan to overcome them: - Researching the problem online and trying to find the information from the internet. - Asking other co-workers for help and trying to figure out the problem together. - Try talking in front of a smaller group.
14
The training/education required for my career is:
Dogwood Diploma (Graduating Secondary School) Going to University and majoring in biology, chemistry, ecology, anatomy, physics, and wildlife management Earning a bachelor’s degree in Zoology Getting an internship to work among other zoologists Earning a master’s degree in Zoology Getting my PhD in Zoology
15
I intend to go to University of British Columbia for that career
University of British Columbia has two different universities and one is located in North Vancouver and the other in the Okanogan. I would be attending the one in North Vancouver, BC, Canada. Bachelors of Science Degree: I plan on majoring in animal biology, zoology, and ecology. The program will take 4 years to complete. I will earn my Bachelors of Science Degree in undergraduate studies. Master of Science in Zoology: This program will take 2-3 years to complete. I will earn my MSc masters degree in Zoology in graduate studies. Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology: This program will take 4-5 years to complete. I will earn my PhD in Zoology in graduate studies.

UBC is known for… Ranking as one of the top 20 public universities in the world For having good engineering/science programs In 2016, UBC was announced the most international university in Canada by Times Higher Education. Their athletics (Basketball, Soccer, and Rugby) The reason why I chose UBC is because… It’s very close to home so I would be able to see friends/family on a daily basis and attend University at the same time. They are known for having outstanding science programs and that’s the program I would be enrolling in. There are many opportunities for scholarships to get into UBC and that would be very resourceful. The location is amazing and has many beautiful views surrounding the university and Downtown Vancouver is only 30 minutes away!
19
Financial Plan Total cost of program: $5,189.70/year
Total cost of 4 year program: $20,758.8 I am going to pay for my program: I am planning on getting a scholarship, so I can pay off my tuition while I attend University. I will ask my parents to help out by paying for some of my tuition fees. Having a part-time job so I can afford rent/other expenses while I attend UBC.
