Main Characters and Setting
The setting of this story takes place all around Middle Earth. Some places filled with nice elves, others with blood-thirsty goblins… Some of the main characters are: Bilbo Baggins, the dwarves, Smaug, and Gandalf
3
One main event that happened in this story was…
Gandalf asking Bilbo Baggins to go on an adventure. Though Bilbo is not very fond of adventures, he gives it some thought. Later on, dwarves pile into Bilbo’s hobbit hole for an unknown reason. As soon as the last dwarves come in, they ask for beer and food. After a while of talk and many songs, Gandalf tells Bilbo that he was the one who made a strange mark on his door, giving the dwarves a green light to come in. Soon, Bilbo gets more acquainted with the dwarves. Everyone starts to discuss the plan to go an adventure to receive the dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield’s ancestor’s long lost treasure, protected by the great dragon, Smaug.

One main event that happened in this story was…
While Bilbo, the dwarves, and Gandalf are in their adventure, they stop to refill on food, water, and resources. While at this stop, a man named Elrond takes a close look at an ancient map in the possession of Thorin. After looking very closely, he finds moon letters, shapes which can only be seen under the moon of the shape and season they were written. This is very key to the group’s success because it tells them how much time they have to get to the secret door that secures the treasure.
5
One main event that happened in this story was…
When Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves took shelter and restocked at Beorn’s house. Beorn is a skin changer, so he can change from a strong man to a mighty bear. Bilbo and company’s stop is crucial because they will need food that can last them for weeks before they go into the forest of Mirkwood. The forest of Mirkwood is a dark forest where almost no light can be seen at all, so it is very easy to get lost. Throughout the long journey through the forest, Gandalf does not accompany Bilbo and the dwarves, for he said that he had “other business to attend to.” Also, the dwarves and Bilbo encounter many dangerous things, such as spiders…

One main event that happened in this story was…
While on their way through the forest of Mirkwood, Bilbo and the dwarves are captured by wood elves. The elves then bring them to their land in north Mirkwood. They are then put in cells for so called intruding their territory. Bilbo is not captured because he was not seen. While encountering a wretched monster in goblin tunnels, Bilbo found a ring that turns the wearer invisible. Bilbo uses this ring to be unseen. After getting a sleeping guards keys, Bilbo unlocks the cells. Bilbo and the dwarves then go down to the wine cellar, where barrels of wine are released into the river. They all climb into the barrels and escape down the river.
7
One main event that happened in this story was…
After escaping down the river with barrels, the dwarves and Bilbo go to Laketown. There, they discuss going up to the mountain to get the gold from Smaug. Some of the people agree, and some disagree. After restocking with weapons and material, everyone decides that Bilbo and the dwarves shall go to the mountain to retrieve what rightfully belongs to Thorin. Going to the mountain was debated because if the dragon Smaug was awakened but not stopped, he would destroy Laketown.
8
One main event that happened in this story was…
Opening the secret door that led into the mountain. At first, the dwarves and Bilbo did not know how the moon letters were going to help them. After many desperate tries, they still can’t get in. Eventually, Thorin holds the key up to the moonlight to reveal a keyhole. The dwarves push the door open to reveal the tunnel that leads into the treasure guarded by Smaug. The dwarves tell Bilbo his task: to retrieve the Arkenstone, a white round gem. After discussing further, Bilbo finally sets off to retrieve the Arkenstone for the dwarves.
9
One main event that happened in this story was…
When Bilbo encounters the great dragon, Smaug. At first, Bilbo goes to retrieve a golden cup to prove that he is important to the expedition. But, he ends up staying longer than expected and having a long conversation with Smaug, for the dragon can talk. Luckily, though Smaug has a stellar sense, he does not recognize Bilbo sense. But, Smaug does realize that more than more than just Bilbo in in the fortress. When Bilbo finally escapes back to the dwarves, they are proud of him. What the dwarves don’t realize is that their problems with Smaug are not over…
10
One main event that happened in this story was…
When Smaug destroys Laketown. Even though the people of Laketown agreed to the dwarves and Bilbo could go and retrieve the treasure from the mountain, this was one of the risks the people were taking. There was total destruction, burned down houses everywhere. This brought great worry to Laketown, and Laketown actually considered making alliances with the elves. Though the people of Laketown don’t know it, they will soon be just fine because of a man called the Bard.
11
One main event that happened in this story was…
When Smaug is killed. Smaug is killed with a gigantic black arrow by the Bard. The only reason that Smaug gets killed is because of a weak spot in all of his scales. Though Bilbo and the dwarves escape and they think that Smaug is still trying to find them, Smaug is dead and they are safe. Bilbo was the first to notice the missing scale on Smaug’s left breast, even though Bard was the one to kill Smaug, not Bilbo Baggins. Though there were more dragons than Smaug in Middle Earth, none were as dangerous as Smaug.
12
One main event that happened in this story was…
The battle of five armies. This is a very important event because of the people that die in the war. The war consists of wargs, goblins, bats, trolls, who were against the Men of Dale, elves, dwarves, eagles, and Beorn. Thorin, Fili, and Kili are the unlucky dwarves who happen to die in the battle of five armies. Also, an important orc leader called Azog dies after surviving many wars. But, Thorin was the one to kill Azog, and he gave up his life by doing so. Though many great dwarves were lost, all were happy in the end.
