Short for Central Processing Unit.
The CPU Short for Central Processing Unit. The brain of the computer where calculations and instructions are processed.

Ram Short form for Random Access Memory The computer’s name memory
Volatile Data in RAM disappears when the computer turns off

Motherboard Contains the basic circuitry in a computer that connects the main components

Hard Drive A storage device used for storing and retrieving digital information such as programs and files

Used for reading CD and DVD disks Used for storing files
Optical Disc Used for reading CD and DVD disks Used for storing files Used for installing programs

Provides power to all of the internal components to a computer
Power Supply Unit Provides power to all of the internal components to a computer

Connects to the motherboard and outputs images to the monitor
Video Card Connects to the motherboard and outputs images to the monitor

Keyboard An external input device used to type data into our computer system

Mouse A handheld input device that controls the movement of the curser on a display screen

Monitor A display screen used to provide visual output from a computer

Microphone An input device that allows us to record the audio
Converts sound waves into electrical energy which can be amplified, transmitted or recorded

Speakers An output device that produces audio output in the form of sound waves

Webcam A video camera that inputs to a computer connected to the internet so that it’s images can be viewed by internet users

Printer An output device that accepts text and graphic output from a computer and transfers the information to paper.

Functions of Computers
Input Processing/ System Unit Output Storage Any device that allows data to the entered INTO the computer system. Takes data from the input devices, processes it, and sends it to the output devices. Displays the processed data. Where information can be stored so that it can be retrieved at a later date.
