3. Rwanda: A social “caste” system
As a rule, the populations of African states are multitribal. (Congo is inhabited by 300 tribes, Nigeria by 250 tribes). However, only one group inhabits Rwanda--the Banyarwanda, a single nation divided into three castes: the Tutsi (cattle owners--14 percent of the population), the Hutu (farmers--85 percent), and the Twa (labourers and servants--1 percent).

6. Why ethnic problems?
Under Belgium rule the Tutsi were considered to be superior to Hutu.
The Tutsi were taller, thinner and their noses were measured to determine which ethnic group they belonged to.
The Tutsi were given special priviledges like education, jobs, nice homes, cars, etc.
When Belgium gave up power in 1962, the Hutu took power and blamed the Tutsi for everything.

8. Cattle Culture-wealth is determined by owning cows, you are honored and looked up to if you have cows. The cow was the measure of wealth, prestige, and power. The King owned cows and so did the Tutsi.
Today, Maasi warriors still protect the cattle in Africa and wear the red allowed only by them.

10. HOTEL RWANDA
On April 6, 1994 the plane carrying Rwanda's president was shot down.
Tutsis were accused of killing the president, and Hutu civilians were told, by radio and word of mouth, that it was their duty to kill any Tutsis.
The men who'd been trained to massacre Tutsis were members of the civilian death squads, the Interhamwe ('those who fight together').
The U.N. Peacekeepers backed out after a clear sign of danger to the Tutsis and failed to stop the Civil War that happened.
