1
The Nuremberg Laws and their Effects of Eugenics
By: Ayanna, Jacob, Julian
2
WW1 Effects and WW2 Causes
WW1 was caused by increased militarism and nationalism Treaty of Versailles, blamed Germany Japanese expansion Economic turmoil left governments astray German people desperate for a proper leader The League of Nations attempted appeasement to Hitler rather than stopping him
3
What was the Nazi Eugenics Program
The laws were made to improve the overall well-being of Germany. Even before the war, eugenics was taking place all over Germany. The government wanted to create the so- called "master" race.
4
Eugenics Doctors Joseph Mengele - "Angel of Death"
Otmar Freiherr von Verschuer – Wrote the "Racial Biology for the Jews" Fritz Lenz – Thought there as a connection between race and mental heredity
5
What were the Nuremburg laws?
In 1935 laws were announced regarding German and Jewish relations. The first law protected the citizenship, blood, and honor of the German citizens. The second law forbade any relations between German and Jewish people. This gave a perfect climate for an ethnic cleansing
6
The effect of the Nuremburg laws on Germany.
Families that had Jewish and German members were forced to separate. Jews were no permitted to hire Germans, and Germans were not permitted to hire Jews. Jews were forced to wear a patch signifying them as Jews.
7
The effect of the Nuremburg laws on Germany. (cont)
Most public services became anti-Jew, these included schools, restaurants, and even hospitals. Hitler viewed his actions as "applied biology" not "persecution or genocide"
8
Hitler's motivation for creating the Nuremburg laws
It wasn’t just some big bad guy going about his ways, he had a personal motivation for doing what he did Hitler's motivation was much different than the way he attempted to execute his plan The fact that he was very poor at one point made him feel sympathy He most likely believed he was doing good as shown by many of his personal letters he wrote Hitler had a genuine belief that the Jewish people were bad for the economy as well as society and progress He believed in the gradual replacement of the modern human race with the Aryan race He believed it was his duty to fix this problem He wanted to create class warfare to an extreme degree so his plan would work for the poor and he would gain their support "He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future."
9
Response of the German people
Many were skeptical, but they remained a minority The vast majority of the population saw Hitler as an idol As Jefferson said would be possible in the founding of our nation, the Majority persecuted the Jewish minority in Germany Throughout the second world war, Hitler's support increased as a result of propaganda and military success It was only when he started losing then shot himself that his support faltered Hitler remained very reliant on compliance before and during the war Hitler's election shows his massive support especially in north eastern Germany
10
Hitler's hatred for Jews
This likely started when he lived in Vienna between 1908 and 1913 He was poor as Jews were rich He decided, with the somewhat Anti-Semitist atmosphere, that Jews had to be part of his problem He later decided that Aryans should replace the modern human race because they were pure
11
Why did he believe in letting the Aryans become the only humans?
"The Aryan gave up the purity of his blood and, therefore, lost his sojourn in the paradise which he had made for himself. He became submerged in the racial mixture, and gradually, more and more, lost his cultural capacity, until at last, not only mentally but also physically, he began to resemble the subjected aborigines more than his own ancestors" He believed that that the Jews were messing up society and that Ayans were the pure humans (and should be the only humans)
12
What was "the master race"
All of the following made you fit: -Blonde hair -Blue eyes -Muscular -Tall -Germanic All of the following illnesses classified you as not fit: -Low intelligence -Schizophrenia -Epilepsy -Dementia -Blindness -Deafness -Deformed body
13
Creating the "master race"
Hitler aimed for an "ethnic cleansing" of Germany, and to a larger extent, the European population Anyone that did not fit the Aryan Nazi ideals was a target Extreme medical procedures and testing such as forced sterilization Joseph Mengle, the most prominent eugenicist at the time, had his own "Twin Town" in Brazil Twins and high fertility rates were extremely important to increasing the Aryan population
14
Candido Godoi ( City of Twins )
A town in Brazil with 10% twin birth rate Next highest national twin birthrate was 4.5-5% in southwestern Nigeria Joseph Menegle made numerous visits there hoping to be able to medically increase the Aryan birthrate Posed as a doctor, offering new drugs and experiments to the women of Candido Godoi Today, most of Candido Godoi twin births are blonde haired and blue eyed
15
Eugenics Today "Ethnic Cleansing" through unjust laws and medical procedures was prevelant before and after the Nazi Regime Most Recent: Rohingya in Myanmar Rwanda Genocide Armenian Massacre Soviet Union in 1940s
