Currency – System of Money Republic – Government where the people elect their representatives Punic – Latin for “Phoenician” Legion – 6,000 Roman soldiers Patrician – Rome’s upper/ruling class; wealthy landowners Triumvirate – A political alliance of three people Aqueduct – Engineering accomplishment through which water was moved throughout Rome for drinking, baths, crops, etc… Plebian – Rome’s lower class: artisans, shopkeepers, small farmers Latifundia – Large farming estate owned by patricians

Consul – One of two patricians chose each year to run the government and head the army (most like our executive branch) Veto – Latin for “I forbid”; to reject another’s decision Praetor – Interpreted the law and acted as judges (most like judicial branch) Dictator – Came to power to see Rome through a time of danger/crisis Julius Caesar – Declared himself dictator for life 44 B.C. Mare Nostrum – Latin for “our sea.” Pax Romana – Roman period during which there was relative peace under Caesar Augustus Augustus – Caesar’s grandnephew, changed his name from Octavian
