AVID’s Mission and Vision for ELD Students
AVID Mission AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. ELD Mission To ensure that English language learners have full access to AVID and college-preparatory coursework.

The ELD Support Class Components:
Support ELLs in all content areas (math, science, English, and social studies) for greater student success Infusion of AVID strategies and methodologies into ELD courses

Characteristics of Long-Term ELLs
Designated ELL for more than 6 years Most born in U.S. and attended all U.S. schools Orally fluent in English -- BICS Reading and writing below grade level — focus on CALP Developing literacy in primary language; may use an informal version of their primary language Often disengaged with school (From California Tomorrow) (From California Tomorrow)

ELD Support Course Goal
Middle School To interrupt students’ path to long-term ELL status, accelerate their language acquisition, and put them on the path to enroll in AVID Elective Course and college preparatory coursework. To re-designated out of ELD and no longer require support services.
