1 Multi-Domain Battle: Achieving Cross-Domain Synergy
Maneuver to positions of relative advantage and project power across all domains to ensure freedom of action. Integrate joint, interorganizational, and multinational capabilities to create windows of domain superiority and preserve Joint Force freedom of maneuver. Exploit temporary domain superiority by synchronizing cross-domain fire and maneuver to achieve physical, temporal, positional, and psychological advantages. SPACE USMC MARITIME CAS/AI AIR UAS EMS Recon SOF Electronic Warfare SOF SOF LAND Guerrilla X SOF SOF CYBERSPACE Proposed domain window definition: simultaneous superiority in selected domains that enables freedom of maneuver. Speed of action: - how fast maneuver occurs in a domain Space and Cyberspace: speed of light Air: mph Maritime: 15-30kts Land: 6-50mph Duration of open window: - timeframes for domain window remaining open (and primary limiting factor once detected) Space and Cyberspace: minutes (CPU/transmitter capacity, # of transmitters/antennas) Air: 1-6 hours (onboard fuel and countermeasures) Maritime: 1-? hours (defensive weapon system magazine capacity) Land 1-3 days (sustainment and personnel) Counteractions: - mitigating the effects of domain window closing Bypass – offensive posture, fight degraded, employ alternative capabilities Fight – offensive posture, employ overwatching fires, close combat Endure – defensive posture, displace, remain effective despite losses Capable land forces potentially offer the most durable platform for opening other windows How we might open a window: 1. Achieve Understanding / Determine Domain Attack Sequence Most dangerous enemy domain Most vulnerable enemy domain Most critical enemy domain ”Stack”/Integrate Joint Force Capabilities Initiate “movement” based upon lead time Integrate partners Use military deception Dislocate Enemy to Seize Initiative Isolate area of operation in all domains Create localized overmatch in all domains Use speed & surprise to maximize windows of overmatch Combine lethal and non-lethal fires Retain opening or create new opening to exploit initiative by maneuvering to subsequent positions of relative advantage “In an era of air and maritime warfare that seems increasingly likely to be dominated by long-range sensors and precision strikes, ground forces [provide the Joint Force] key attributes of resilience, persistence, and sustainability.” - Beyond Coast Artillery: Cross-Domain Denial and the Army, Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments 12 As of 23 SEP 2016
