Kennedy Group Questions
1. The speech is a succession of 27 short paragraphs. 12 only have 1 sentence, 8 have 2, and 6 have 3. Why were these short paragraphs used? 2. The speech contains two extremes of sentence length, ranging from 94 words to 6 words. A lot are on the short side. Why? 3. More than 22 sentences are complex. What is their effect? 4. Paragraph 23 consists of 2 rhetorical questions. How do they act as a transition to Kennedy’s call for action? 5. Consider the speech’s use of parallelism. How do they lend themselves to Kennedy’s purpose? 6. Find examples of rhetorical devices such as metaphor and personification. 7. Do any words in the speech seem archaic or old-fashioned? If so, what are they? What is their effect?
