What is a clause? A group of words that contains a subject and a verb.
A clause may be either a sentence (an independent clause) or a sentence-like construction within another sentence (a dependent clause).

Well, then what’s a phrase??
A phrase is a collection of words that may have nouns or verbals, but it does not have a subject doing a verb. The following are examples of phrases: leaving behind the dog smashing into a fence before the first test after the devastation between ignorance and intelligence broken into thousands of pieces because of her glittering smile A clause is a collection of words that has a subject that is actively doing a verb. The following are examples of clauses: since she laughs at diffident men when the saints go marching in because she smiled at him.

Dependent vs independent clauses
can stand alone as a sentence (i.e., it expresses a complete thought). Example: I like pizza. Pizza is my favorite food. Dependent Clause: cannot stand alone as a complete sentence because it does not express a complete thought Example: unless the pizza is cold. rather than eat vegetables.

Simple Sentences What is a simple sentence? Here is an example:
A sentence consisting of only one clause, with a single subject and verb. Here is an example: Alicia goes to the library to study every day.

Compound sentences What is a compound sentence?
Made up of two independent clauses and joined with a conjunction The conjunctions are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (Helpful hint: The first letter of each of the coordinators spells FANBOYS.) Here are several examples: I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English. Alex played football, so Maria went shopping.

Complex sentences What is a complex sentence?
Has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. A complex sentence always has a word such as because, since, after, although, or when or that, who, or which. Here are examples—take note of the punctuation! When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page. The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error. The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow. After they finished studying, Juan and Maria went to the movies.

Compound-complex sentences
A sentence with two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Here is an example: Although I like to go camping, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found anyone to go with. We decided that the movie was too violent, but our children, who like to watch scary movies, thought that we were wrong.

Manned by machines, large plants are where most eggs are processed today. After an egg is laid, it gently rolls long the slanted floor of the cage to a narrow conveyor belt. These narrow conveyor belts converge into one wide belt that runs directly into the processing plant. As soon as the eggs reach the processing plant, they are automatically sprayed with detergent and water. The eggs then pass through a special lit inspection area, and effective eggs can be detected and removed. After the eggs are weighted, they are separated by weight into groups. Each group of eggs goes onto a separate conveyor belt, which leads to a forklike device. This device lifts six eggs at a time, and the empty egg cartons wait two feet below it. The eggs are gently lowered into the cartoon, which are then shipped to grocery stores and supermarkets.

Monotonous Cinderella: ABC Cinderella:
How many words are in each sentence? What effect does this create? What do you notice about the 1st word of each sentence? What do you notice about the structure of each sentence? ABC Cinderella: What part of speech is used to start each sentence? What happens to a sentence when it starts with something other than a subject?

Your own fairy tale Rewrite the story in 26 sentences. Each sentence must begin with the next letter of the alphabet. Compound sentences count as one sentence. You must also use a variety of parts of speech for your first words, not just nouns. The dictionary/thesaurus may be useful when you reach a “block” in your writing. You may choose any fairy tale, as long as you can tell it in 26 lines.
