1 Lesson 3 The big decision A new reservoir for Oxfordshire?
Paper 3 Lesson 3 The big decision A new reservoir for Oxfordshire?

2 Using the booklet search for evidence!
On the back of your booklet Write down what evidence (data, viewpoints, figures) there is in the booklet that supports the new reservoir. Write down what evidence there is that shows it is not a good idea! So two lists: FOR AGAINST Important to reduce risk from future drought (figure 3 p6) By 2039 Oxfordshire using 1634 million litres per day. (fig 3 P6) Could be used as a recreational facility like Farmoor reservoir Will provide jobs when it is constructed Water transfer schemes: Companies from water rich areas (Northumberland) could sell water to water scarce areas Cost £1 billion! (not in booklet but a useful bit of info!!)

3 Is water provision sustainable in the Thames valley?
Now categorise your list (colour) into the elements of the sustainability stool! Is water provision sustainable in the Thames valley? Important to reduce risk from future drought (figure 3 p6) By 2039 Oxfordshire using 1634 million litres per day. (fig 3 P6) Could be used as a recreational facility like Farmoor reservoir Companies from water rich areas (Northumberland) could sell water to water scarce areas Cost £1 billion! (not in booklet but a useful bit of info!!) ECONOMIC SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTAL These will become your paragraphs!! For example: The most important reason that the reservoir should go ahead is ENVIRONMENTAL

4 Now we need to plan the answer!
We will rank order the elements of sustainability. Which is the most important reason? Look at your list and the colours used!! Economic? Environmental? Social? We will structure our answer using the on the other hand rule as part of the PEELE paragraph idea. On the A3 hand paper FOR AGAINST Environmental Add: ‘this means that’ or ‘so’ what sentences to explain on post it notes to each point! this means that the growing population (100,000 people per year) of the Thames valley would have water security so ensuring a good quality of life Important to reduce risk from future drought By 2039 Oxfordshire using 1634 million litres per day. East Hanney will have an increased flood risk On the other hand

5 Lets try: Pick a couple you would like to use.
FOR AGAINST Environmental On the other hand Add: ‘this means that’ or ‘so’ what sentences to explain on post it notes to each point! Important to reduce risk from future drought By 2039 Oxfordshire using 1634 million litres per day. this means that the growing population (100,000 people per year) of the Thames valley would have water security so ensuring a good quality of life East Hanney will have an increased flood risk This should help you build a PEELE paragraph: x2 Lets try: Pick a couple you would like to use. POINT: The most important reason for allowing the reservoir to go ahead is environmental EVIDENCE: According to Thames Water it is important to ‘reduce the future risk from drought in the area’ (figure 3 P6) EXPLAIN: this means that the growing population (100,000 people per year) of the Thames valley would have water security so ensuring a good quality of life. LINK: This means water supply will be sustainable beyond 2040. EVALUATE: On the other hand the environment is probably the main reason why it should not be built as East Hanney would suffer increased flood risk in the future. (figure 3 P7)

6 Second paragraph Now do one for social!

7 Final paragraph: Sum up
Overall I think that…the reservoir should be built This is because…. Pull out something new from the booklet. The best argument you have! The best facts you have!! According to Thames Water the average rainfall in this area is 737mm per year substantially less than the average, water transfer schemes like the one proposed from Kielder will enhance Abingdon reservoir ensuring 9 million customers in this wealthy area in the SE of the UK need the water especially with climate change and events like the Beast from the East that fractured pipes and caused huge leakages so this is why it has to be built. This will ensure that Thames Valley will have a sustainable water supply beyond The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

8 Introduction: What is your decision?
I think that the Abingdon reservoir should be built due to a number of reasons… Point (FOR) The most important reason is… Evidence Information, data, quote from the booklet. Explain This means that Link Is it sustainable Evaluate AGAINST statement with a ‘this means that’ comment. Environmental According to Thames Water it is important reduce risk from future drought this means that the growing population (100,000 people per year) of the Thames valley would have water security This means water supply will be sustainable beyond 2040. : On the other hand the environment is probably the main reason why it should not be built as East Hanney would suffer increased flood risk in the future. Social Economic This will be the other way round as it it the main reason that the reservoir SHOULD NOT be built!! Conclusion: Overall I think that….the main reasons are…. Which means that the NEEDS OF THE MANY OUTWEIGH THE NEEDS OF THE FEW!!!!!!
