1 Mark 4:35-41 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

2 Mark 4:35-41(continued) 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

6 Mark 4:35-36 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.

7 Growing in the wind 1. Jesus’ purpose (v35-36)
Went over to the other side. What for? Demon possessed man (Mark 5:1-20) Woman who had been bleeding for 12 years (Mark 5:25-34) Synagogue leader Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5:35-43)

8 Matthew 18:14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.

9 Growing in the wind 1. Jesus’ purpose (v35-36)
Went over to the other side. What for? Demon possessed man (Mark 5:1-20) Woman who had been bleeding for 12 years (Mark 5:25-34) Synagogue leader Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5:35-43) Went along ‘just as He was’

10 John 4:34-35 34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

11 Mark 4:37 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.

14 SQUALL (1994)

15 Growing in the wind 2. The Squall (v37) Sudden and unexpected
Furious - threatened to sink the boat

16 John 16:33 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

17 Growing in the wind 2. The Squall (v37) Sudden and unexpected
Furious - threatened to sink the boat BUT…It’s ok if Jesus is in the boat: ‘Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion…’ (v38a)

18 Mark 4:38 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

19 Growing in the wind 3. Disciples reaction (v38)
Fear of the storm cause them to: Good: Wake up Jesus Not so good: Doubt

20 Psalm 121:1-3 1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber

21 Philippians 4:6-7 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

22 Mark 4:39-40 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

23 Growing in the wind 4. Jesus' response (v39-40)
Rebuked the wind (reveals His authority over the storm)

24 Psalm 46:1-3 & 10-11 1 God is our refuge and strength an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

25 Growing in the wind Jesus' response (v39-40)
Rebuked the wind (reveals His authority over the storm) Rebuked the disciples (reveals their lack of faith)

26 Hebrews 4:14-16 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

27 Mark 4:41 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

28 Growing in the wind Results of the squall (v41)
Fear of the squall lead to the reverent fear of Jesus

29 Psalm 89:5-8 5 The heavens praise your wonders, Lord, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. 6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings? 7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. 8 Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

31 Growing in the wind 5. Results of the squall (v41)
Fear of the squall lead to the reverent fear of God Disciples asked, ‘Who is this?’

32 Matthew 16:15-17 & 21 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

33 Food for thought Jesus’ purpose: Do you know what your purpose is? Are you letting circumstances get in the way or distract you? The squall: What storms of life are you facing right now? Are you facing it with Jesus? Disciple’s reaction: How are you dealing with the storms in your life? Are you turning to Jesus with the right attitude? Jesus’ response: Do you have faith in Jesus? Are you confident that he is greater than any storm? Results of the squall: Do you know who Jesus is? Are you fearful of the elements or in reverent fear of God.

34 Let’s press on! Let’s move forward in our God given purpose
Let’s remain in Him Let’s seek God with all our hearts Let’s have faith and do not doubt Let’s acknowledge God for who He is
