1 Chapter 5 Community Environments

2 5 Regions of the United States
Example Communities and Physical Landforms : Northeast – Stamford, Connecticut - hills and forests Southeast – Charleston, South Carolina - wetlands Midwest – Omaha, Nebraska - flat lands and rivers Southwest – Tucson, Arizona - canyons and deserts West – Bozeman, Montana - mountains and rivers

3 5 Regions Wildlife and plants: Northeast: deer, foxes, and trees
Southeast: blue herons, alligators, and Spanish moss Midwest: coyotes and grass Southwest: snakes and cactuses West: fish, bears, and trees

4 Adapting to new environments
Moving to a new places can make you change the way you do things or change the environment: Wear warmer clothes Heat your home Build irrigation to bring water to fields Cut down trees to build houses or make land for farming Build roads and railroads

5 Living in Different Climates
Climate is caused by distance from the equator, nearness to a body of water, and land elevation above sea level Barrow , Alaska – very cold - far from the equator Kauai, Hawaii – very warm – close to the equator Cape Cod , Massachusetts – mild climate – near the ocean Omaha, Nebraska – colder winters/ warmer summers-far from water Taos , New Mexico – dry, warm days/ cool nights – high land elevation

6 Pueblo Indians The Pueblo Indians of New Mexico have adapted to the climate by building their homes out of adobe to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer.

7 Resources Natural Resources are useful things found in nature. Communities are built and grow quickly where valuable resources are found. California – gold discovered at Angel’s Camp - people dug deep mines to find gold - population grew quickly Texas - oil discovered in Beaumont - people drilled wells to find oil

8 Conserving Resources is Important
Ways to conserve our natural resources: Use less Don’t waste Recycle Reuse Use them carefully Think of alternatives

9 Line graphs show changes over time.
Each dot shows an amount at a certain point in time The line of dots shows increasing and decreasing amounts from day to day, month to month, or year to year The dots will show you the highest and lowest amounts of change over a certain period of time Number amounts will be on the side and times will be at the bottom The graph will have a title that tells you what the graph shows

10 Vocabulary Region Physical environment Climate Landform Ecosystem
