Ice Breaker Which worksheet was easier to answer? Why? “Who are the Real Heroes?” This is an animated slide. Instructions below will tell you when to click on mouse to see more print on slide. Discuss first question on slide with group. Ask them to turn to their partner and talk about one of the “teachers” they wrote down on their worksheet. Ask if anyone wants to share out their personal “hero.” Click on mouse for second bullet “why” Ask participants why this second worksheet was so much easier for them to answer. Click on mouse for third bullet “Who are the Real Heroes” Ask participants to look at the answers on their two worksheets and then think about the new question on the slide, “Who are the real heroes?” Discussion should revolve around the people who care around you are the real heroes. Children may idolize Beyonce and Kanye West, but they are not the ones getting them through high school, driving them to their games, signing report cards or picking up medicine for them.

Your Thoughts … What comes to mind when you think about family engagement/parent involvement?
5
Research says … “Parental effort is consistently associated with higher levels of achievement, and the magnitude of the effect of parental effort is substantial. We found that schools would need to increase per- pupil spending by more than $1,000 in order to achieve the same results that are gained with parental involvement,” Conway said May 2008; Karen Smith Conway, professor of economics, University of New Hampshire; Andrew Houtenville, senior research association at New Editions Consulting
6
Research says … When parents are involved at school, the performance of all the children at school, not just their own, tends to improve. The more comprehensive and well planned the partnership between school and home, the higher the student achievement. Henderson, A.T., and Nancy Berla A New Generation of Evidence: The Family Is Critical to Student Achievement. Washington, DC: Center for Law and Education, 14–16. Parent involvement in education is crucial. No matter their income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school. prepare the child for school each day serve on Campus and District committees Help the school as chaperones, monitors, and mentors. They assist in the workroom, help as picture day helpers, coordinate fundraising, read to students, make academic manipulatives for teachers and students, attend trainings and so much more!

A successful family engagement program touches, includes, and welcomes the participation of all families. There are numerous ways parents can serve as volunteers, assist teachers, and work actively to support the campus, the staff, and the students. As parents gain increased skills and confidence they may take on larger leadership roles – mentors to either other parents or students, tutors to students, liaison to community groups, and even campus decision-making. As their role increases in responsibility their “voice” also becomes more influential.
