What is CENDI? Interagency group of senior federal STI managers who agree to cooperate by Exchanging information and ideas Sharing resources Undertaking joint initiatives From policy to standards to operations 12 member agencies manage over 97% of the annual federal R&D budget

CENDI Membership An interagency group composed of senior STI managers: 12 major programs 4 independent agencies 7 cabinet departments 1 legislative branch agency CENDI began with four agencies and took its name from the beginning letter of each member agency: COMMERCE – National Technical Information Service (NTIS) ENERGY – Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) NASA – Scientific and Technical Information Program (STI) DEFENSE – Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) I NFORMATION 5

A Long and Well Established History of STI Cooperation
1960s-1970s COSATI organized information, information analysis, and data centers across the federal government Weinberg report on Science, Government and Information a major impetus (1964) Mid-1970s, COSATI was dissolved but STI managers continued to meet informally 1984 CENDI was formalized with an MOU of 4 (C,E,N,D) agencies NLM joined in 1986

CENDI’s Mission and Goals
To help improve the productivity of federal science- and technology-based programs through effective scientific, technical, and related information support systems. 1. STI Coordination and Leadership: Provide coordination and leadership for information exchange on important STI policy issues. 2. Improvement of STI Systems: Promote the development of improved STI systems through the productive interrelationship of content and technology. 3. STI Understanding: Promote better understanding of STI and STI management.

Priority for FY11: Develop a CENDI Grand Challenge Challenged by OSTP Chris Greer “Science2Jobs” – a work in Process Vision – Fully interoperable data & information network that stimulates job growth by enabling new opportunities for innovation and discovery Goal and Objectives – Expand Science.gov to drive data-intensive science -- including research, education and applications Create a semantically rich information network across agencies; Extend the scope of “data objects” presently served Integrate other agency capabilities with Science.gov so that the whole becomes a larger network that enables business innovation by a broad array of stakeholders
