A soliloquy is when a character shares his/her thoughts to the audience.
In a play, it has to be in the form of a speech because there can’t be any voice overs. Hamlet’s famous “To be or not to be…” speech is a soliloquy. Soliloquy Friday, November 09, 2018

An aside is a remark that a character makes in an undertone to the audience or another character but that others on stage are not supposed to hear. A stage direction clarifies that a remark is an aside; unless otherwise specified, the aside is to the audience. These asides are sometimes difficult to figure out because there are not many stage directions in Shakespeare’s plays. So you need to use your inference skills to figure out what is suddenly said aside from the rest of the dialogue. An aside Friday, November 09, 2018

Irony is based on a contrast between appearance or expectation and what is actually happening.
Dramatic irony is what the characters in the play, movie or book think is true, and what the audience actually knows to be true. When dramatic irony is used, the audience knows what is happening, or about to happen before the character does, creating a tension between the audience and the characters. For example: In Romeo and Juliet, you know that the poison Juliet swallowed only put her to sleep, and didn’t kill her, but Romeo doesn’t. Of course, this is why he kills himself. Foreshadowing is the writer’s use of hints or clues to suggest what events will occur later in the work. For example: Shakespeare employs this literary tool throughout his tragedy "Romeo and Juliet." In Act 2, Scene 5, Friar Laurence advises the lovers to be cautious in love, "These violent delights have violent ends ... Therefore love moderately." Also: The tragic death of the two lovers is also foreshadowed by Romeo's suicidal notions and Juliet's recurring morbid thoughts which she expresses in Act 1, Scene 5, saying, "My grave is like to be my wedding bed." The purpose of the tragic hero is to evoke sad emotions such as pity and fear, which makes the audience able to experience catharsis and able to relieve them of their pent up emotions. The tragic flaw of the her leads to his demise or downfall that in turn brings a tragic end. This gives wisdom to the audience to avoid such things in their every day lives. The sufferings and all of a hero, arousing feelings of pity and fear through catharsis, purges the audiences of those emotions to transform them into good human beings and good citizens.
