Objectives of the technical team
Assuming that we want the volunteers to be engaged in the organization as long as possible, our technical team will look at the following What influences voluntary service at country level? What motivates people to volunteer and remain volunteers (psychology of volunteers)? What discourages them to volunteer? How can National Societies increase and sustain volunteer engagement over time? Developing a tool, a common benchmark and a common understanding to monitor and manage volunteer motivation among RC/RC Movement and with other volunteer organisations -> iMotivate tool 7th March 2018 Motviation of volunteers

Volunteer motivation monitoring tool, iMotivate tool
Based on qualitative research and preliminary quantitative results, we develop an instrument for measuring the social and motivational quality of volunteer projects. The tool monitors the following elements of motivation: - Volunteers’ satisfaction of basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness - Overall satisfaction with the activity - Organizational commitment and identification - Intent to remain with the organization or the project - Quality of supervision using SDT concepts of autonomy support - Social support among volunteers and between volunteers and professionals - Respect and appreciation 7th March 2018 Motviation of volunteers

A strenght but can lead to some conflicts
Results of similar studies in Switzerland Differences between Voluntary service and paid job A strenght but can lead to some conflicts Voluntary service Paid job In my volunteer activity, nobody has to tell me what to do. This activity allows me to influence and change the community. My volunteer activity is morally-driven. In this activity, I do what matters for me. This activity says who I am. Motivations : To help people in need or to do something with other persons… 7th March 2018 Motviation of volunteers

Voluntary service is based on free will
Voluntary service is based on free will. How can we cope it with requirements, management and control?
8
Results of similar studies in Switzerland Un unexpected result…
Recognition from vulnerable person – Recognition from the org. Heavy feeling of being obliged to… + – Technical support In Switzerland we discovered that recognition from the organisation can have a negative impact on volunteer motivation…
9
How can recognition (something positive) be felt like an obligation?!
One theory explains this phenomenon
10
Intrinsic motivation Financial incentives, prices, distinctions
What can reduce intrinsic motivation: Financial incentives, prices, distinctions Scare of sanctions Critical feed-back (not informative feed-back) Competition Intrinsic motivation is «self-determinated».
11
Extrinsic motivation «I have to do it (mission)» Extrinsic motivation can be either self-determinated or external determinated or controlled. Extrinsic motivation can be self-determinated: There is an understanding of what the counterpart feels Justify why something is necessary or useful Give the opportunity to choose Give an informative feed-back (not critical)
12
Different types of motivations
Afraid from the critics Social pressure Feeling guilty Willingness to please Conviction Willingness to act Related to own values Interest Being part of it Pleasure External regulation Introjection Identification Intrinsic motivation Control and external determination Self-determination Voluntary service is about freedom! Control not for too long, somethimes necessary in an emergency. Volunteering is free will, better if self-determinated According to some research the best volunteering activity should make sense, be diverse and provide a good feedback to the volunteers 7th March 2018 Motviation of volunteers
13
Are there good or bad sources of motivation?
Values Self-determination Experience Self-Esteem Protection Control and external determination Social adaptation We have a mix of motivation. 1.) Protective Motives – a way of protecting the ego from the difficulties of life. 2.) Values – a way to express ones altruistic and humanitarian values. 3.) Career –a way to improve career prospects. 4.) Social –a way to develop and strengthen social ties. 5.) Understanding –a way to gain knowledge, skills, and abilities. 6.) Enhancement –a way to help the ego grow and develop. Career (Stukas et al., 2016; Güntert et al., 2016; cf. Gagné & Deci, 2005)

Online questionnaire : we will send you a link for your NS! NS are free to take part in it! We need a minimum of 2 NS per region. You can translate it in local language. If your NS provides more than 200 questionnaires, you get statistics and preliminary results of analysis for discussion in the NS and Alliance. Possibility of comparing projects in the same NS Volunteering motivation monitoring tool (VMMT) If conducted on regular basis, you improve the quality of coordination and supervision of volunteers. We can link with the PSS Center in Copenhagen The results of the study will be shown on Volunteering Alliance Website, during the Statutory Meeting of 2019 and on the Global Volunteering Forum 2020. 7th March 2018 Motviation of volunteers
