1 Building Capacities

2 Capacity: Process Overview
Data collection from HPS in the form of floor plans and corresponding room utilization information Classroom use by grade level/ subject Classrooms used for special education programs Specialty use classrooms/ labs Presence of shared spaces(Gym, Art, Music, other) Presence of Cafeteria Accessibility (Presence of elevator, barriers)

3 Capacity Calculations
Class Size Maximums PreK: 20 K-2: 23 3-7: 27 8-12: 28 SPED (Self-Contained): 12 Montessori: 28 Calculated capacity based on teacher contract limits and physical space standards (industry standards and CT DAS guidelines) Adjusted capacity by space based on a differential between the two calculations to reflect operating needs of buildings Burns Latino Studies (example) Capacity by Contract: x 0.85 = 637 Capacity by Space: 634 x 0.85 = 539 Difference: 637 – 539 = 98 35% of Difference 98 x 0.35 = 34 Add 35% of difference back to Capacity by Space: = 573 (Study Capacity)

4 Capacity: Assumptions and Clarifications
Capacities represent an average of a capacity range for the program (+/- 5%) Seat capacities include an operational efficiency factor of: 95% for Magnets and district schools of grade configuration PK-6 and 85% for PK-8, PK-12, Middle and High school grade configurations. Spaces excluded from capacity calculations: Shared spaces (i.e. Gym, Art, Music, Computer Labs) – Grades K-8 SPED Resource Literacy, Speech Rooms (Generally 500 SF, or smaller) Science classrooms in MS facilities, unless specifically assigned to a grade level. Otherwise counted as shared. Specialty program spaces shared across grade levels Natatoria Unassigned classrooms within a building counted as Specialty rooms with capacity. Capacity information is based on district’s current use of space as reported between April through August 2016.
