Computer-aided design (CAD)
Jourae Hall 2nd Period
2
What is CAD? Computer-aided design is the use of computer systems to aid in the creation, modification, or analysis of a design which replaces manual drafting with an automatic process.

Who Created CAD? Patrick Hanratty (1957)
Credited as “The Father of CAD/CAM”. Developed PRONTO (Program for Numerical Tooling Operations), the first commercial CNC programming system. Ivan Sutherland (1963) Thesis “Sketchpad, A Man-Machine Graphical Communication System”, which included the first graphical user interface, using a light pen to manipulate objects displayed on a CRT.

Evolution of CAD AutoCAD 2D to 3D (Parasolid and ACIS) Pro/ENGINEER
“Internet-enabled“ Autodesk, Dassault Systèmes, PTC and UGS AutoCAD marked a huge milestone in the evolution of CAD. From this point on, increasingly advanced drafting and engineering functionality became more affordable. However, CAD software was still predominantly 2D-based. This all changed in 1987 with the release of Pro/ENGINEER. It ran on UNIX workstations, as PCs still didn’t have the capabilities required by CAD programs. By the 1990s, the PC was finally capable of the computations that 3D CAD required. This led to turmoil for the UNIX workstations.

CAD Today? The use of Computer-aided design has increased over the years and nowadays, every product is being created with the use of CAD. With the introduction of PCs, smartphones and tablets, CAD became available on cloud, web and mobile technologies.
