Rationale: The purpose of this culminating piece is to capitalize on student’s understandings of Shakespeare, in particular A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and for students to gain valuable experience in the writing process, including the preliminary introductory stages of thinking about writing. My hope is that students will become better writers, generate an appreciation of Shakespeare (not necessarily a liking), and be able to relate themes in the story to their everyday lives.

Assignment: Choose ONE of the topics on the next slides to write a 5- paragraph, formal, argumentative essay. Your essay MUST ARGUE for what you think Shakespeare is saying about love. However, you may choose through which perspective you would like to tackle this argument.

ROMANTIC OR SCEPTIC Was Shakespeare a hopeless romantic (happy ending for all) or a cynical pessimist (happy ending due to a drug-forced love) who believed that true love didn’t exist? You decided, supporting your argument from text from the play and ultimately concluding what Shakespeare might be saying about love.
WHAT IS LOVE Love is portrayed in many different ways in the play. In an essay, explore at least three different ways love is presented, and what Shakespeare might be saying about love.
I WILL DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE The characters in the play will do anything for love. In an essay, examine at least three different characters in their pursuit of love. What are they willing to do/refuse to do in order to receive the love they desire? What is Shakespeare saying about love through these stories?
LOVER’S QUARREL Look at the lovers (Lysander and Hermia, or Demetrius and Helena,) and analyze at least one of their relationships in detail. Are they really in love? What is their relationship like? What is Shakespeare saying by this couple? What is Shakespeare saying about love through these different couples? Use the text to support your answers.

14. TRUE LOVE Argue for or against Lysander’s quotation, “the course of true love never did run smooth” by using evidence from the text. Then determine what Shakespeare is saying about love.
REASON “Reason and love keep little company together nowadays” Bottom says to Titania, as Titania is under the power of the flower. Argue for or against this reasoning using evidence from the text, culminating in defining what Shakespeare is saying about love.
ROYAL Theseus and Hippolyta are not the most likely couple, and don’t have a whole lot lines between them. Analyze in depth their relationship, both historically (through research) and in the play. What is Shakespeare saying about love through these characters?
THE FAIRIES Oberon and Titania are not suited for marriage. Give support for or against this statement with evidence from the text, concluding with what Shakespeare might be saying about love through these characters.

March 13th -20th. This is Tu, Wed, Th, F, M, Tu.
Outside work is recommended for optimal performance and grade.
On those days, the beginning of class will consist of providing you with lessons on constructing an essay.

This will continue for the week until all needed information has been presented.

19. Example Thesis Statements
Shakespeare, in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, presents two lovers who commit suicide due to “what’s written in the stars”. In reality, Romeo and Juliet’s deaths are a result of a desperate Friar, young love, and family fueding.
In Anthem, Ayn Rand uses depersonalized names, communistic-like society, and strong characters to illuminate her readers to her belief systems.
In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury explores the theme of censorship through his characters, the society he builds, and the plot, ultimately concluding, that too much censoring leads to a deprived life.
