Weather
2
3 Main Types of Clouds Cirrus – high level clouds, high altitude
Isolated clouds – stable – no rain Dense clouds – often indicate a storm Stratus – low - level – layered clouds that usually bring a drizzle Cumulus– neutral weather clouds Video
3
Cloud Prefixes Nimbo & nimbus– precipitating cloud
Ex: Cumulonimbus & Nimbostratus Alto – means tall mid level clouds Ex: Altostratus & Altocumulus Cirro – means high Ex: Cirrostratus & Cirrocumulus
4
Clouds that produce Weather
Cumulonimbus – heavy dense clouds produce thunderstorms and hail Nimbostratus – continuous rain cloud – blots out the sun
5
Predicting Weather We look at where air masses come together Ryan Davidson Explains
6
Thunderstorms in next 24 hours
7
Rotational Hurricane Coriolis Effect - The rotation of the Earth causes an interesting phenomena on free moving objects on the Earth. Objects in the Northern Hemisphere are deflected to the right, while objects in the Southern Hemisphere are deflected to the left. The coriolis effect thus tries to force winds to shift towards the right or left.
8
Traveling Air Masses Air mass in a valley travels up a mountainside
Caused by solar energy warming the air after it is re-radiated from the ground
9
Hurricane Forces What does an ocean add to a hurricane?
Heat and moisture!
10
Atmospheric Pressure We use a barometer to measure atmospheric pressure Let Bill explain it!
11
What does Ozone do to temperature?
As you increase altitude in the Stratosphere the temperature increases because of Ozone
12
Creating Warm Moist Air
Which stage of water cycle creates warm, moist air? Evaporation!
