1
Human Body Systems Group #1 - Support
The Skeletal System The Muscular system The Integumentary System (Skin)
2
The Skeletal System - Functions
provides shape & support for body protects internal organs provides movement produces blood cells stores calcium and phosphorus
3
The Skeletal System - Structures
Cells = bone marrow (hollow area of long bones) produces blood cells Tissues = connective tissue ligaments attach bones to other bones Organs = humans have an internal skeleton (endoskeleton) made of 206 bones
4
The Skeletal System - Interactions
Muscular = works with muscles to move the body Nervous & Senses = responds to the commands of the nervous system to move including voluntary motion, involuntary motion and reflexes Cardiovascular & Immune = bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets Lymphatic = movement of the body pumps the lymphatic system
5
The Muscular System - Functions
provides movement supports internal organs regulates body temperature muscles generate heat example: you shiver to keep warm
6
The Muscular System - Structures
Cells = are able to contract, stretch, and then regain shape Tissues = muscle tissue striated (skeletal muscle tissue) smooth (internal organ muscle tissue) cardiac (heart muscle tissue) Organs = muscles, tendons (connect bones and muscles)
7
The Muscular System - Interactions
Skeletal = works with bones to move the body Nervous & Senses = responds to the commands including voluntary motion, involuntary motion, and reflexes Digestion = chewing, swallowing, and grinding food in stomach Cardiovascular = the heart circulates the blood carrying nutrients to the body Respiration = the diaphragm helps the lungs inhale and exhale Lymphatic = movement of the body pumps the lymphatic system
8
The Integumentary System – Skin Functions
protection of body sensory response to environment makes vitamin D that helps absorb calcium regulates body temperature (sweating to release heat) excretes wastes
9
The Integumentary System – Skin Structures
Cells = full of keratin protein; very elastic Tissues = connective tissue Epidermis (top layer, produces new skin) Dermis (bottom layer contains nerves, glands, insulating fat, and melanin) Organs = skin is the body’s largest organ
10
The Integumentary System – Skin Interactions
Immune = holds in important nutrients and fluids helps keep out bacteria and viruses regulates temperature (fat insulates and sweat gland remove heat) Excretory = sweat gland in the skin remove water and other substances Nervous & Senses – responds to surroundings
