Before we get into the massive changes that took place, we first must define what Renaissance exactly means Definition: The humanistic revival of classical art, architecture, literature, and learning originating in14th century Italy which spread throughout Europe Historical categorization, not conscious movement

Renewal of “Classical” ideas due to greater trade and the Crusades Began in Italy Especially in Florence, Italy The Renaissance spread from quickly throughout Italy

Improvement in Oil Painting Technology/Technique The development of Humanist Philosophy Development of moveable type printing This helped to spread the ideas of the Renaissance quickly throughout all of Europe

The plague weakened the power of the Church This changed the focus of art and educational study Previously the interest had on been in works by the Church and glorifying God

The patronage of the Medici Family and other newly wealthy families Wanted to prove their wealth This wealth came out of the changes which occurred because of the Black Plague and Med. Sea trade

Chance! It was kind of dumb luck that so many talented artists lived and worked in the same location and time period The impact of wealthy patrons, renewal of Classical Ideas, spread of information, and mutual inspiration can’t be overstated, but chance is also essential

16 Medieval Art The art of the time often reflected the dark mood of the times Paintings are not very realistic looking largely by conscious choice Focused more on the concept presented and the abstract idea of the piece Sculptures were less lifelike, to prevent idol worship

Paintings: Focus on the human body Nude Depictions Realistic Depictions Depiction of Greek and Roman Myths As well as Christian stories Focus on perspective, color, and light This gives paintings from the Renaissance depth and a sense of reality not found in Medieval Art The best way to see and understand this is to look at some art!
