San Diego Humane Society
I chose to volunteer my time with the Human Society because I love animals (especially cats and dogs) and I think that they need as much love and affection as human beings. I know that a loving pet can make a big difference in a person’s life. Unfortunately, there are a lot of unwanted, neglected, and abused animals just waiting for someone to adopt them. In the meantime, they need someone with a big heart to take care of them and I decided that someone is me! After all, a dog (or cat) is man’s best friend!

Contact Information The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is located at 5500 Gaines Avenue in San Diego (off Moreno Blvd. on 8 West) The phone number is The person I worked with is Judy Patterson I worked every Saturday from January to April 2009 from 9am-12noon for a total of 48 hours and will continue to work there through June 2010

Description of duties Because my favorite animals are cats I spent most of my time grooming the cats. Unfortunately I had to do the not-so-glamorous duties as well like cleaning the litter boxes and food dishes, but it was worth it to be able to do the fun stuff like comb and play with the kittens. The cats need a lot of exercise since they are in an enclosed space so I enjoyed teasing them with the various toys and seeing the baby kittens jump around and even do somersaults. Some people don’t know that cats need to be groomed just like humans. Their teeth need to be brushed and their nails need to be trimmed. As you can imagine this is not the easiest task to do, but it is fun, especially with the feisty cats. As a volunteer the duties are fairly simple since you don’t need to have formal veterinary training, but you do have to go through a “volunteer seminar” that lasts a total of 5 hours to make sure that you are ready to work with the animals. Also, you have to be committed to work at least 10 hours a month for a 4 month period. On occasion I did get to take the dogs out of the kennels and walk them, but since I prefer to work with cats, that is what I mostly did.

Lesson Learned This experience was both good and bad in different ways. I enjoyed volunteering at the SDHS because I was able to help take care of so many adorable animals that may otherwise be neglected, but it also broke my heart to see so many animals remain in the shelter week after week without a loving home. I wanted to take all of them home! I have always had a passion for animals but working at the human society made me realize that sometime in my life I would like to become more involved with animals as more than just a hobby or volunteer.

MY CAT MEOWZERS! I got my cat from the San Diego Human Society in 1998 when he was only 4 months old. Actually, he was a birthday present. Now this year he will be 12 years old! Isn’t he adorable?
