Originated in Palestine in 33 C.E. Developed out of Judaism Founder: Jesus Christ Two main early leaders: Jesus & Paul Based upon the life & teachings of Jesus Followers called Christians Religious writings called the Bible

Holy Bible: Broken up into 2 parts Old Testament & New Testament The Holy Bible was used when Christianity was originally beginning and is still used modern day, a major continuity Old Testament New Testament First division of Christian bible Explains history of creation of world, exodus of Israelites, & 10 commandments Talks about God sending Messiah to Earth 2nd division of Christian bible Focuses more on life & teachings of Jesus & Christian church Jesus came to save Earth

Originally Practiced Originally, Christianity was not allowed to be practiced in Rome Romans were polytheistic and the worship of many gods was encouraged Because of this, Christianity had to be practiced in secrecy Execution was possible if caught worshipping

Many places of worship: churches, chapels, cathedrals, even homes Most Christians attend some sort of worship service on Sunday, like church Includes singing, praying, and sermon Christianity is practiced at home by reading bible & praying 2 major sacraments: baptism and communion Baptism usually occurs around infancy and is admission into Christian church Communion- receiving of Eucharist Christians also have & celebrate many holy days like: Christmas (Birth of Jesus), Good Friday (Death of Jesus), Easter (Resurrection)

The Death of Jesus Christ
The death of Jesus is a major turning point After he was crucified & died, his disciples preached that he rose from the dead They said that Jesus was the son of God People that accepted this message & became Christian, which was a major reason why Christianity started to spread

Background of the Schism
The event that led to the schism is the fall of the Roman Empire; there was a disconnect and loss of communication between the two halves leading to a split Eastern churches (Orthodox) were led by patriarch of Constantinople while western churches (Catholic) were led by Pope Leo IX

The adoption of Christianity in Rome is a major turning point Constantine: Roman emperor who was in a battle and saw the cross on a shield, made him believe in Christianity Passed the Edict of Milan: this allowed Christianity to be practiced throughout Rome As a result of this Christianity spread Emperor Theodosius: made Christianity official religion of Rome Emperor Theodosius Emperor Constantine

Christian beliefs Today
Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human, and the saviour of humanity whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament. The foundations of Christian theology are expressed in ecumenical creeds. These professions of faith state that Jesus suffered, died, was buried, and was resurrected from the dead in order to grant eternal life to those who believe in him and trust in him for the remission of their sins.
