Chris bought a jacket at 25% off. Sandra got 95% on her Science test. Mimi has read 50% of her book. Jordan’s iPad has 17% battery left. Max pays 8% interest on his mortgage. Can you think of any other examples of percentages in everyday life?

Percentages in Everyday Life
Percentages are all around us. They are so common in our everyday lives that we may not even realise when we are using them! Some everyday uses of percentages include: finance (interest rates) weather (chance of rainfall) labelling (nutritional information) data displays (survey results) sport (player statistics). Can you think of any others?

What is a Percentage? 75% percentage A percentage is another way of expressing a fraction (a part of a whole). The word percentage actually means ‘per hundred’. One whole is represented by 100 parts out of 100. This is written as 100%. Percentages can also be expressed as fractions and as decimals. 75 100 fraction 0.75 decimal

Percentage Equivalences
This square represents one whole. The whole has been divided into one hundred equal parts. Another way of saying this is that the square has been divided into one hundred hundredths. = 100% = 1 whole

These coloured squares represent forty-three hundredths of the whole square. As a decimal, this is written as 0.43. As a percentage, this is written as 43%.
