3 D1. Refresh Remainders LG: To solve problems with remainders REFRESH!
Before you go onto the activity watch the video below to refresh what a remainder is remainders/v/introduction-to-remainders Have a go at the questions below making sure to show the remainder 1.13 divided by 2 2. 17 divided by 3 3. 25 divided by 4 4. 75 divided by 7 5. 88 divided by 6 6.123 divided by 21 7. 87 divided by 3 divided by 4 divided by 70 divided by 65 6.422 divided by 11 7. 47 divided by 9 divided by 42 divided by 20 divided by 15 HARD!

4 D2. Level 6 find a simple fraction of a quantity In the activity we learned that a remainder is what remains after dividing. For example, when dividing 7÷3, divided by, 3, we get 2 with a remainder of 1, which can be written like this: 7÷3=2 R 1 But what do remainders mean in the real world? To answer this question, let's think through some examples.

5 Problem 1: Chocolate bars
Charlie has $17 to spend on chocolate bars. Chocolate bars cost $3. Charlie buys as many chocolate bars as he can with his money. Which of the following describes the remainder in this situation? The amount of money Charlie has left over. The number of candy bars Charlie buys.

6 Problem 2: Carnival rides
A carnival ride holds 5 people at a time. There are 38 people in line to ride the ride. Which of the following describes the remainder in this situation? Please choose from one of the following options. The number of times the ride will run so all people can ride. The number of people on the last ride.

7 Problem 3: Penguins There are 13 penguins going on a field trip to an iceberg. The penguins get into 6 equal-sized groups. How many penguins will be in each group?

8 D3. The Halving Strategy

9 For example

10 COLOUR! Which pieces of paper can you colour 3 quarters red and 1 quarter blue. Stick the coloured paper into your book

11 D4. The Thirding Strategy

12 FOLD! Fold different kinder squares using the thirding strategy to make different sized parts

13 Colour Colour 1 third red and 1 third blue and leave 1 third blank

14 The Fifthing Strategy

15 FOLD! Fold different kinder squares using into 5, 10 and 15 equal parts

16 COMBINE STRATEGIES! Using halving, thirding and fifthing. Fold kinder squares to show different number of equals parts. Try: Halving first, Then thirding, then halving again….how many equal parts are there? Try 3 of your own combos!

17 VIDEO - SEESAW Create a video that explains how to fold a
square into each of the number of parts from the table.

18 D3. Fraction Symbol In this example 2 out of 5 parts ar shaded
This can be written as 2 fifths 2 out of 5

19 D3. Fraction Symbols Complete the following table in your book
2 fifths 2 out 5 2/5 3 sixths 3/4

20 D4. Fraction Wall Draw a fraction wall showing the way 1 whole can be broken into EQUAL parts depending on the fraction.

21 D5. Fraction Number Line Draw a number line from 0 - 1.
Place the following fractions on a number line. ½ ⅔ ¼ 2/2 ¾ 5/10 1/1 1

22 Introducing Decimal Numbers STOP!!!! WATCH THE DECIMAL VIDEO ON WEEBLY

23 Decimal Numbers in Everyday Life
She is 7.5 years old. He is 8.5 years old. She is 1.23 m tall. He is 1.28 m tall. She lives 2.25 km from school. This is Joanna. This is Joshua. He lives 1.75 km from school. What do the numbers on this slide have in common?

24 What is a Decimal Number?
A decimal number is another way of writing a number which contains a fraction. Decimal numbers may be less than or greater than 0. The decimal point is used to separate the whole numbers from the fractions. It is always placed between the units column and the tenths column. whole number fraction (six tenths) 23.6 decimal point

25 Place Value in Decimal Numbers
When writing decimal numbers, each digit holds a place. This place represents the value of that digit within the number. If there are any whole numbers in the decimal, these belong on the left-hand side of the decimal place. Any fractions, or parts of a whole, belong on the right-hand side of the decimal place. Hundreds Tens Units Tenths Hundredths whole numbers fractions

26 Place Value in Decimal Numbers - Tenths and Hundredths
The first column on the right-hand side of the decimal point is the tenths column. The tenths column is ten times smaller than the units column. The second column on the right-hand side of the decimal point is the hundredths column. The hundredths column is ten times smaller than the tenths column. 6.28 units tenths hundredths

27 Writing Fractions as Decimals - Tenths
This square represents one whole. The whole has been divided into ten equal parts. Another way of saying this is that the square has been divided into ten tenths.

28 Writing Fractions as Decimals - Tenths
This coloured bar represents one tenth of the whole square. As a decimal, this is written as 0.1.

29 Writing Tenths as Decimals – Example
What fraction does the coloured section represent? How is this written as a decimal? The coloured section represents four tenths of the whole. As a decimal, this is written as 0.4.

30 Writing Tenths as Decimals - Review

31 Writing Tenths as Decimals - Answers
Fill in the missing information in each of the questions below.

32 Writing Fractions as Decimals - Hundredths
This square represents one whole. The whole has been divided into one hundred equal parts. Another way of saying this is that the square has been divided into one hundred hundredths.

33 Writing Fractions as Decimals - Hundredths
These coloured squares represent forty-three hundredths of the whole square. As a decimal, this is written as 0.43.

34 Writing Hundredths as Decimals – Example
What fraction does the coloured section represent? How is this written as a decimal? The coloured section represents seventy-eight hundredths of the whole. As a decimal, this is written as 0.78.
