1 When Sin Entered the World

2 Satan’s Lie Satan denied the reality of the curse of death and God’s veracity – 3:4 He added only one word to God’s statement - 2:17 Man was seduced into believing he would not be punished for sin (Ecc. 8:11) Men today live as if they will not die (Lk. 12:16-21; Heb. 9:27) We need to live prepared for death (Isa. 38:1; Mt. 25:13)

3 Satan’s Tactics Satan used one of God’s creatures to bring about the fall of man – 3:1 He now works through men to deceive us through false teaching (Mt. 16:21-23; 2 Cor. 11:14-15; 1 Tim. 4:1) Notice the thoughts of Paul and Peter (1 Corinthians 9:27; 2 Peter 2:20-22)

4 Satan Denied God’s Loving Kindness
By saying God kept back something good for man – 3:5 We know God is good, loving and will not hold back anything good from us (Ps. 135:1; Jn. 3:16; Rom. 8:31-32; Mt. 7:7-11)

5 Satan Said Nothing of the Positive
Adam and Eve could eat of all the other trees of the garden He said God did not want them to eat because: Their eyes would be opened They would be as God, knowing good and evil Actually these were partially true – 3:7, 22

6 Three Basic Areas of Sin
Satan focused on 3 basic areas to tempt man (1 Jn. 2:15-17) Lust of the flesh is uncontrolled appetite of the body (saw the tree was good for food) Lust of the eyes is excited by sight (pleasant to the eyes) Pride (vainglory) of life is seeking worldly rewards and praise of men above that of God (desired to make one wise)

7 Man’s Eyes Opened They were now ashamed – 3:7-10
The innocence of the garden shattered – 2:25 They tried to hide from God and discovered they could not (Ps. 139; Jer. 23:24; Heb. 2:12-13) Tried to pass the blame to someone else – 3:12-13 Consequences of sin remain with the one who committed the sin (Ez. 18:4, 20; Gal. 6:7-8) The serpent, Eve and Adam all faced punishment – 3:14-19

8 Fellowship Broken Man’s special fellowship with God was now brought to an end – 3:22-24 From this time forward, God put in motion a plan to bring man back All men unconditionally received the sentence of death because of Adam Romans 5:12 Regained unconditionally in Christ 1 Cor. 15:20-22 John 5:28-29

9 Conclusion The Savior came into the world by woman, thus taking away the stigma of sin from her – 3:15 (1 Tim. 2:15) Seed of woman must refer to Christ (Mt. 1:18-25; Isa. 7:14) Seed of serpent would be all those who follow Satan (Mt. 23:33; Jn. 8:44; 1 Jn. 3:10) Enmity between followers of Christ and the world is natural because good lives and teachings expose the bad (Jn. 15:18-19)
