2 Definition of Child Abuse
Any maltreatment of a child under the age of 18

3 Every day an average of 5 children in the United States are so badly abuse that they die.

4 What is the second leading cause of death?
The leading cause of death among young children is accidents. The second leading cause of death for children is PHYSICAL ABUSE.

5 Four Categories of Child Abuse
Physical injury: burns, bruises, broken bones, bites, etc. Emotional: lack of love and affection; verbal abuse

6 Four Categories (cont.)
Neglect: lack of food, shelter, clothing, hygiene, medical attention Sexual: Using a child for sexual gratification; pornography; molestation

7 Why doesn’t a single incident indicate child abuse?
Child abuse is a PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR.

8 Why do parents who were abused become abusers?
It is a cycle of abuse. They do not know any other way to parent.

9 What are common traits among parents who abuse?
They were abused themselves as children. Possess low self-esteem. Unable to handle stress. Possess anger management problems.

10 Situations which might trigger physical abuse
Parents under work pressure Individuals under extreme stress Individuals in situations in which they lose control

11 Who is required to report child abuse?
Anyone who knows of a possible case Teachers, physicians, and other individuals who come in contact with children each day

12 Who do you contact? Children Protective Services

13 Why hesitate to report it?
Some individuals do not want to mistakenly accuse someone Some individuals do not want to get involved.

14 Failing to report child abuse
May result in up to 180 days in jail and/or Up to $ fine

15 Treatment Parenting classes Psychological counseling
Support group therapy

16 Alternatives Call someone for help
Place child in a safe environment and remove yourself Take out stress in appropriate manner Ex. Take a walk, physical activity

17 What signs should a teacher look for?
Poor hygiene Lack of food or appropriate clothing Unexplained bruises or injuries Inability to socialize with others Misses school frequently
