Any maltreatment of a child
under the age of 18

The second leading cause of death for children is PHYSICAL ABUSE.

Physical injury: burns, bruises, broken bones, bites, etc.
Emotional: lack of love and affection; verbal abuse

Neglect: lack of food, shelter, clothing, hygiene, medical attention
Sexual: Using a child for sexual gratification; pornography; molestation

7. Why doesn’t a single incident indicate child abuse?
Child abuse is a PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR.

8. Why do parents who were abused become abusers?
It is a cycle of abuse.
They do not know any other way to parent.

9. What are common traits among parents who abuse?
They were abused themselves as children.
Possess low self-esteem.
Unable to handle stress.
Possess anger management problems.

10. Situations which might trigger physical abuse
Parents under work pressure
Individuals under extreme stress
Individuals in situations in which they lose control

11. Who is required to report child abuse?
Anyone who knows of a possible case
Teachers, physicians, and other individuals who come in contact with children each day

Children Protective Services

13. Why hesitate to report it?
Some individuals do not want to mistakenly accuse someone
Some individuals do not want to get involved.
