2 Elementary Music Supplies for 4th-5th graders
(2nd grade- no supplies, just smiling faces!) Folder/binder Pencil Notebook paper Staff paper (or staff book) 5th graders only will need the following: Soprano Recorder Essential Elements for Recorder Book 1

3 Elementary Chorus Directed by Ms. Cino
Auditions on Wednesday, October 4th 7:30-8:30 am Rehearsals will take place Wednesday mornings from 7:30-8:30 am Holiday Show performance is December 6th!! Information to follow once child has been successfully auditioned.

4 Expectations Play age appropriate music designated by teacher
Read traditional music notation (and TAB for guitar) Perform in concerts Take care of assigned instrument Demonstrate positive behaviors Have fun!!

5 Class Discipline/Conduct Grades
Poor behavior such as talking, gum chewing, tardiness will not be tolerated School discipline plan procedures will be followed Students will lose instrument privileges if he/she does not demonstrate responsible behaviors and will be given an alternate assignment Sign Behavior Contract Talking Tickets- get 3, earn a B; get 6 earn a C, 7 or more phone call/conference

6 Materials ½” Black binder or black folder with prongs
Essential Elements Book 1 Plastic sheet protectors (10-20) Pencil Composition notebook or loose leaf paper Staff book or manuscript paper Instrument specific supplies (e.g. strings, reeds, medium guitar pick)- see handout Black “Music MLK-8” Polo ( about $15, to be ordered at a later date) Concert attire: black shirt, black shoes, and black pants.

Guitar 1: Essential Elements for Guitar Book 1 (optional) Guitar 2: Essential Elements for Guitar Book 2 (optional) Orchestra 1: Essential Elements for Orchestra Book 1 for violin, viola, cello, bass Orchestra 2: Essential Elements for Orchestra Book 2 and 3 for violin, viola, cello, bass Band: Essential Elements for Band Book 1 for flute, clarinet, trombone, trumpet, combined percussion ALL STUDENTS IN BAND AND ORCHESTRA MUST HAVE THEIR OWN BOOK!

8 Instrument Supplies Guitar: You must have a guitar pick everyday
Band and Orchestra- each instrument has specific additional supplies. Bring your supplies and INSTRUMENT to class! This is part of the rehearsal preparedness grade (20%).

9 Orchestra Strings Shoulder rest Rosin Polishing/Cleaning Cloth

10 Guitar Guitar Pick- Medium Nylon Classical Strings

11 Band Clarinet Reeds and cork grease (Vandoren 3’s) Drum Sticks
Trombone/Trumpet Oil and Slide Grease All: Polishing Cloth All : Swab

12 Clarinet Reeds “Rico Royals” 2.5 or 3 are acceptable
“Vandoren” reeds 2.5 or 3 are preferred

13 Grading Procedures Home Learning 10% Performances 35% Class work 35%
Rehearsal Techniques 20%

14 Rehearsal Techniques Having/Doing the following during each class/rehearsal 1) Instrument 2) Pencil 3) Book/Binder 4) Good behavior 5) Ready on time 20% of total academic grade

15 Performances Performances are mandatory- 2 week notice must be given if a child is going to miss a performance. (Absence due to illness will require a note from parents.) Holiday Show, Spring Concert and Fine Arts Night Additional performances will be scheduled for selected groups. These are mandatory.

16 Home Learning Home learning assignments will be sent home in the following ways: 1) Daily practice on the instrument (for those with one at home) 2) Writing music notes on staff paper 3) Assignment with instructions on my website Access to (internet connection) is a must to complete home learning!

17 Written Work All written assignments, such as research, must be written in the students own words. Plagiarized content will receive and F.

18 Instruments and Care The child is responsible for the assigned instrument. Any damage caused by irresponsible behavior will result in the replacement or repair of the instrument paid for by the parents. Sign Instrument Responsibility Form Students are encouraged to purchase their own instrument but PLEASE SEE ME BEFORE PURCHASING AN INSTRUMENT. INSTRUMENTS PURCHASED ONLINE ARE NOT ENCOURAGED. (They may be cheaper but you get what you pay for.)
