most don’t know what a real hurricane is like! We have become complacent.
- It’s not just another rainy day with some high winds, and then it’s over!

Build a home emergency kit
Power is out, you have gas, what do you need on a emergency plan/kit?
Personal drinking water, 1 gal. /person /day.
Non-perishable food after 1 -2 days, including Fido
Flashlights, batteries, candles, matches
Personal medications, spare glasses
Extra baby supplies
Fill the bath tub with water, as you might need it for washing pots/ pans and flushing toilets.
Temporarily store blankets in a lawn & leaf bag …. Until needed.
Games for kids & adults.

Take the time to discuss and build a personal family hurricane plan.
Communications
The roof blew off of your house, while not all are at home! Where will you pre-agree to meet?
All cell phone coverage is out! Where is the nearest payphone?

Alternative places/locations to sleep if required to evacuate? Hotels/friends out of the area?
Copy a list of hotel phone #’s ….. There will be no internet service.
IF you have pets, are the hotels pet friendly?
VERY IMPORTANT - Get cash $$$ ahead of time - ATM’s need electricity – you need cash.

Tropical Depression – contains winds up to 39 miles per hour.
Tropical Storm – contains winds from 39 to 73 mph.
Category 1 – hurricanes have winds from 74 to 95 mph.
Category 2 – hurricanes have winds from 96 to 100 mph.
Category 3 – hurricanes have winds from 111 to 130 mph.
Category 4 – hurricanes have winds from 131 to 155 mph.
Category 5 – hurricanes have winds 156 mph or greater.
NOTE: Most NHC Emergency vehicles stop 35 MPH winds!

Register with to get emergency alerts via TXT, phone or from NHC.
If required, emergency shelters will be announcer by NHC. There are 2 types: pet friendly and regular shelters.
