What were the objectives, preconceptions and expectations of the English in Virginia? How did the colonists and Indians interact and what were the underlying tensions in these encounters? What were the immediate and long-term results of the colony? In the end, were the objectives of England for the colony achieved? Why or why not?

What were the objectives, preconceptions and expectations of the English in Virginia? Read the questions at the bottom of the handout (and below), and keep them in mind as you read the excerpts. Questions: What were the specific goals behind English efforts to establish a permanent settlement in North America? What attention do these documents pay to the Native American inhabitants of the area selected for colonization? Based on your assessment of the English goals, what are some of the sources of conflict you can imagine arising between the colonists and Indians?

3 How did the colonists and Indians interact and what were the underlying tensions in these encounters? View the following images and the next two slides and think about what these images reveal concerning the attitudes of the artists who created them.

Completed in 1585, this illustration is one of the most valuable pictures of Native American life we have because White actually accompanied an expedition to the area and based his drawing on his firsthand observations

7 Opechancanough, brother of Chief Powahatan and Pocohantas's uncle, did not like the English presence in Virginia, as this scene suggests. When he became chief upon his brother's death, Opechancanough attacked the English at Jamestown, though he failed to drive the English from Virginia. (John Smith's Generall Historie, 1624)
