What is a shadow? What causes it?
A shadow is a decrease in the amount of light reaching a surface. It is caused by an object placed in between the light source and the surface, which blocks light from reaching the surface.

How is the concept of a shadow important in understanding a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves directly between the Earth and the Sun. The Moon casts its shadow on the Earth when it blocks out the sunlight.
