4 Expectations/Course Review
Daily Work—You are expected to come to class each day prepared and ready to learn.  When you come in to class, please prepare your work space for the day’s instruction.  There will be directions given upon your arrival to class.  Please adhere to the directions that you are given, as your cooperation will maximize valuable class time.   Food for thought: Did you know it takes three years to learn something on your own, but only one year if you’re being taught?

Behavior—It is imperative for students to show respect toward one another, the instructor, and school property at all times.  Please adhere to all school rules. In order for the class environment to be a safe place for the exchange of ideas, you must be considerate and respectful to others; this includes raising our hands to speak and refraining from side conversations.

iPad Policy—Do not open, start, or operate your iPad unless you are instructed to do so by the teacher; all iPads MUST be in your backpack or under your desk any time they are not in use. In other words, keep the iPad off and away, unless instructed otherwise.   All notes must be handwritten, not typed (unless otherwise indicated by the LRC).  Cell Phone Policy: Cell phones and any other electronic device are prohibited in this class. They are to be silenced and hidden from view at all times.

8 Renaissance in England
Slow to progress because the English language was in a state of flux There was no standard spelling In 1454 the invention of the printing press changed that How would the invention of the printing press change the way of life for people in England? What modern day connection can you make to the printing press?

9 Important Developments
1530—grammar schools taught Latin, the universal language of the day Queen Elizabeth ( ) took a great interest in cultural development 1588—the defeat of the Spanish Armada was widely interpreted as an act of divine intervention, a sign that England was now a world power Late 1570s—Phillip Sidney and Edmund Spenser

10 Sidney and Spenser Poetry no longer reflects heavenly beauty or echoes cosmic harmony—it isn't rhyming and versing that make a poet, Sidney said. Instead, literature becomes a depictive art, a narrative with semantic content. The new poetry created "speaking pictures“, and it acquired this ability to address simultaneously both ear and eye by virtue of its medium. Language allows poetry to display aural and visual properties, relating it to music on the one hand and with painting on the other.

11 How is this relevant today?
Think about the topics and themes we read about and discussed last semester—how do you think the writers of the 16th and 17th century might differ? How is the English Renaissance relevant to our lives today? What role did it play in shaping our society?
