Epic Canceling and Rescheduling Appointments
In this lesson, we’ll look at canceling from the Appointment Desk. Patient appointments can be canceled from several different locations. Just as creating an appointment can be from several sources, so can the reason for cancellation (parents call, clinic calls, user error).

Canceling and Rescheduling Appointments: Epic Basic Appointment Cancellation
To cancel from the appointment desk, click once to highlight the appointment. The bottom of the screen has several options that will be available after the appointment is highlighted. Cancel by clicking on the Can/Resch button on the toolbar Right-click on the appointment, then select Cancel from the drop-down menu.

The cancellation reason is a required field, as indicated by the red stop sign. If you don’t enter one, you will get an error message. Click on the magnifying glass for a list of reasons from which to choose. You may enter any pertinent comments in the comment field.

If you selected Cancel Appointments, the displayed Cancel Appts window will indicate the selected appointments are canceled. You can click Reschedule from this window to reschedule the appointment.

From the cancel appointment screen, you will also have the choice of rescheduling the appointment before you actually cancel it. This could be helpful, if after being advised of other options, the patient/parent decides to keep the original appointment. Instead of clicking Cancel on this screen, click Reschedule.

After clicking Reschedule, you will be taken to the Make Appointment/Reschedule window where the appointment details will be retained to prevent you from having to re-enter them. Once the new appointment is successfully rescheduled, the old appointment will be canceled. In the event no new available appointment times are suitable for the patient/parent, and they choose to keep the original appointment, simply close the Make Appointment window without rescheduling another appointment. The original appointment will still be scheduled.
