Photosynthesis and Energy
Energy Within the Cell
2
Photosynthesis Light energy drives the reaction.
Oxygen is released as a product Light energy drives the reaction. carbon dioxide from the atmosphere Glucose made in leaf Water from the soil provides hydrogen and oxygen for glucose.
3
The Process Light energy is converted to chemical energy
Low energy reactants become high energy high energy products Light dependent reactions and carbon fixation reaction Write the chemical equation for photosynthesis.
4
Light-Dependent Reaction
Light energy converted to chemical energy, temporarily stored in ATP. Absorption of light energy causes a loss of electrons by pigments involved in photosynthesis (Chlorophyll is a pigment)
5
Light-dependent reaction continued
Pigments replace electrons - taken from water. Water splits into hydrogen and oxygen. Oxygen released into the atmosphere. Hydrogen proton and its electron combine with coenzyme NADP+, becomes NADPH. Energy released is stored in ATP.
6
Carbon Fixation Phase- Calvin-Benson Cycle
Hydrogen atoms taken from water joined with carbon dioxide to make GLUCOSE! The energy needed to make glucose comes from ATP and NADPH made during light- dependent reaction.
