Mechanical Weathering
The physical breakdown of rocks
4
TYPES OF MECHANICAL WEATHERING
5
Freezing and Thawing Water in rock’s crack freezes, expands, and breaks the rock apart
6
Abrasion (Wind or Water)
Rocks and Sand rubbing on each other via wind and/or water

Animal Action Various animal behaviors breakdown rocks

Plant Growth Plant’s roots burrow into cracks, grow, and break rocks apart
9
Release of Pressure Outer layers of rock are removed, releasing pressure and causing cracking on the rock
10
Chemical Weathering The breakdown of rocks through chemical changes
Caused by water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, living organisms, and acid rain
