The density and ratio are needed to operate the scanner properly
The density and ratio are needed to operate the scanner properly. When inspecting the film quality we are looking for splices, cracks, deterioration, and anything else that will interfere with the scanning process. Many times extra lead film is needed to thread the film onto the scanner. We also collate the reel to determine all of the newspapers that occur on the reel. With this information we create a master workflow list that the student workers follow from the beginning to the end of the project.

When framing or image quality comes out really badly, we have to make a series of steps for processing instead of doing it all at once. The workflow helps keep track of whether or not all of those steps have been completed. Image processing is where the bulk of the work is done on a digitization project. Many student employees were needed to complete this step. All images are cropped, many of them are split, de-skewed and enhanced. When this is complete the master TIFFs are created. The master TIFFs are then checked by another person for quality. If needed, re-processing of images occur. Once the TIFFs pass inspection then they are assembled as newspaper issues. This process is checked again by another person. After the issues have been verified then the derivative files can be created. For this project we created a multipage searchable PDF for each issue of the newspaper.
