23 Date Objectives: Examine why Maryland was founded and why Carolina was split into North Carolina and South Carolina. Describe the early history of Georgia and the plantations of Maryland and Virginia. Examine how the economies of North and South Carolina differed. Compare and contrast the lives of wealthy planters and slaves. (Start Cornell notes here)

Warm up Look at the map on page 93. What were the most important cities in the Southern Colonies by 1763? Jamestown, VA; New Bern, NC; Charles town, SC; and Savannah, GA

Setting the Stage 1630s – Maryland was started.
TB 92 1630s – Maryland was started. Middle 1660s settlement spread to the Carolinas.

Lord Baltimore George Calvert Roman Catholic Friend of King Charles I
TB 92 George Calvert Roman Catholic Friend of King Charles I Given land along the Chesapeake Bay, north of Virginia. George Calvert dies leaving the land to his heir, Cecil. 1634 – Maryland is established and named for an English queen. Hmmm, I wonder if she needed a band-aid????

Caro lina TB 92 1663 – Land is given to 8 Lords Proprietors by Charles II for helping to restore him to his throne. The land was called Carolina after the Latin name for Charles which is Carolus. LP hoped to make $$ by selling and renting property. Failed 1712 Became 2 colonies due to differences. South more prosperous

Two goals – Provide debtors with a place with which to build a new life Keep the Spanish in Florida from settling farther North First Leader James Oglethorpe + 30 families start Savannah Slow growth War with Spanish and Native Americans First farms failed Only own 50 acres of land Slavery forbidden Settlers had to do a certain type of farming Soil not right for that kind of farming 1752 – charter expires; GA becomes a royal colony.

What was life like in the South?
TB 94 Plantations Maryland (MD) and Virginia (VA) Many grew tobacco Chesapeake Bay and harbors Settlers to MD and VA sailed through CPB Harbors = ships could load and offload goods.

NC and SC… Why so different?
TB 94-95 NC Few Rivers or harbors along the Coastal Plains were deep enough for ships Few good harbors Small on the western part of the plain. Subsistence farming SC Coastal Plain is swampy Warm and moist area good for growing rice Built rice plantations Larger than tobacco plantation 1700s, people began raising indigo plant that grew well in high, dry ground.
