The Regions of South Carolina
2
The Coastal Region Zone
From the ocean inland 10 miles comprises the Coastal Region. Grand Strand (From NC to Winyah Bay in Georgetown) Santee Delta (mouth of the Santee River) Delta - triangular shaped land that forms from mineral deposits at the mouth of a river. The Santee Delta is the largest on the east coast. Sea Islands - Santee Delta to Savannah River into GA. They protect our coastline from waves and storms. Barrier Islands - Built and constantly changed by the sea. ex. Kiawah, Seabrook, Fripp Beaufort and Hilton Head Island 1st Settlements were built here.
3
The Coastal Plain Region (Outer and Inner Coastal Plain)
The largest region (20,000 square miles) from the coastal zone to the sandhills. Highest elevation is about 300 ft. above sea level. Only difference between the inner and outer, the inner has a few more hills then the outer. Santee, Florence and Orangeburg. Suited for Agriculture and Farming Bays are oval depressions, very fertile soil. ex. Big Swamp in Sumter County.
4
The Sandhills Region It is in the middle of the state.
Stretches from Coastal Plain to the Fall Line. Fall Line - Point at which rivers fall from the high land to the lower land. Thousands of years ago this was the coastline. It is also called "Red Hills" because sand has a reddish color. Also call the "Midlands". Includes Aiken, Chesterfield, Kershaw, Richland & Sumter counties. Columbia, the capital, is in this region. Also includes Aiken & Camden
5
The Piedmont Region Fall Line to Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont means "Foot of the Mountains" or "Foothills". Second largest region. About 1/3 of the state. Rolling and Hilly. Fertile soil and some too rocky to grow crops. An interesting landscape feature - Monadrock. Monadrock - granite peak that rises suddenly above nearby areas. ex. Paris Mountain, Glassy Mountain, Kings Mountain, Table Rock Mountain These are all within 20 miles of the Blue Ridge except Little Mountain, it is almost 100 miles from the Blue Ridge. Monadrocks were probably part of a mountain chain separated by erosion. Erosion is a gradual wearing away of the surface by wind and rain. There are automobile and textile factories in this region.
6
The Blue Ridge Region Named for the Blue Ridge mountains.
Extreme NW corner of the state. Smallest region, less than 2% of the state, 600 square miles. Terrain (land & natural features) is rugged. Elevation is from 1400 ft ft. Consist of metamorphic rock - rock that has gone through several changes over time. Creep - a slow movement of material down hills (mountain erosion) Steepest slope are in Blue Ridge region Pinnacle Mountain (3,425 ft) highest mountain totally in SC. Sassafrass Mountain (3,554 ft) highest mountain shared with NC.
