2. Important vocabulary-
Schism- A split; A division
Patriarch- Biblical figures known as the father of the human race, ex: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob etc..
Trinity- One God in three persons, ex: the father, son, and holy spirit
Paganism- A religion other than one of the main world religions, specifically a non-Christian or pre-Christian religion

3. Background information
-The Great Schism was the split between the Roman Catholic church and the Greek Orthodox/Catholic churches.
-This problem occurred during the 11th Century.
-The east were the Greek speaking Byzantine Empire and the west were the Latin speaking Christian church.

4. The leaders of the churches
Pope Leo IX is the pope in the east and Patriarch Michael Cerularius I is the patriarch in the west when the schism started.
Leo IX was the catholic church’s 151th pope. He served from February until his death on April 9, 1054 and was declared a saint. He aimed to eliminate Church’s evils : clerical marriages, simony, and lay investiture.
Patriarch Michael Cerularius served March 1043 to November His ambitious desires for political power, coupled with his beliefs in autonomy, led him to toward Constantine attempt to ally Byzantine and Roman empire in defense against Normans.

5. The normans
During 1020 the Normans/Vikings intruded the Southern half of Italy.
Attempts by Pope Leo IX of Rome were made to triumph over the Normans.
The attempts miserably failed and Pope Leo was defeated.
Later, the Normans seized the pope and started to close all the churches in the Southern half of Italy (Byzantine empire).
As we see there were already tensions in Rome!

6. Split between rome & constantinople
Causes of this split was:
Issues between the east and the west due to different theologies and religious disagreements.
Effects of the this split was:
Most of the population was highly confused on which side to support .
Many christians lost the sense of strength in their faith.
People were concerned on church authority and believed the dispute was chaotic.

7. Different churches and Their ideologies-
Roman Catholic
Greek Orthodox
-Believed the holy spirit proceeds from the father.
-Don't believe the pope as having all power. They are led by the patriarch and emperors have power over religious leaders.
-Main language was Greek. Services conducted in Greek or other local languages
Divorce is allowed under certain conditions.
-Priests are allowed to marry
-Believed the holy spirit proceeds from the father and son.
-Popes were highly respected and were the most important authority, they had power over kings and emperors.
-Main language was Latin which is the only language service is conducted in

8. Byzantine culture spreads
-Trade routes were increasing (Black Sea, Black Sea)
- Slavs began to trade with Constantinople in the 9th century.
- note : this was an example of cultural diffusion
- some influences were : church architecture, art, trade routes, greek alphabet to Slavic languages, orthodox christianity).
