1 Transformations with Cacti
“Biomes of the World” Transformations with Cacti

2 *Instant Stars are number 1s!
Round Robin Starting with the 4s and continuing clockwise, discuss the following two questions: 1. What is a biome? 2. What are the different types of biomes? *Instant Stars are number 1s!

3 What is a biome? A biome is a large geographical area characterized by certain types of plants and animals. A biome is defined by the complex interactions of plants and animals with the climate, geology (rock formations), soil types, water resources, and latitude (position north or south on the globe) of an area.

4 What are the different biomes of the world?
Tundra (bitterly cold regions with little plant growth) Coniferous (evergreen) Forests Deciduous (trees that usually lose their leaves in the fall) Forests Grasslands Tropical Rain Forests Aquatic Desert And more!

5 A Desert is a Biome Deserts are the world's driest regions. Most of the vegetation there takes the form of drought-resistant plants such as cacti (plural form of cactus), which store water in their stems and have waxy coverings, and scrubby plants like the creosote bush, that have extensive root systems. The animals that live in the desert are able to survive with little or no water. The camel, for instance, stores water and fat in its hump. And the kangaroo rat gets all the moisture it needs from solid food; it can go its entire life without drinking a drop of water.

6 *Instant Stars are number 3s!
Round Robin Starting with the 2s and continuing clockwise, discuss the following question: 1. What is the difference between a translation, rotation, reflection, and dilation? *Instant Stars are number 3s!

7 Transformations Review
Transformation: Maps one figure onto another Translation: Moving a figure without turning it, or a slide Reflection: Mirror image produced by flipping a figure over a line Rotation: Figure is turned around a fixed point Dilation: Image produced by enlarging or reducing a figure

8 Transformations with Cacti
Fold your graph paper into four equal sections and label it as follows: 1. Translation: 5 units left and 2 units down 2. Reflection: Over y-axis 3. Rotation: 90 degrees counterclockwise 4. Dilation: Scale factor of 1/2

9 Simultaneous Round Table
For each of the four sections you must: Draw the original cactus Draw the transformed image Write the new coordinates Everyone start with number 1. After the timer goes off pass the paper clockwise and complete number 2, and so on. Have early finishers color the cacti, or have them color them for homework!

10 Exit Slip Predict the results by drawing the transformed image, without graph paper, of the following cactus after being reflected over the x-axis, rotated 90 degrees clockwise, and dilated by a scale factor of 2.
