1 Symbolism notes A symbol is an object that represents something else, either by association or by resemblance. It can be a material object or a written sign used to represent something invisible.

Answer in your notes.

3 What did you come up with?
The American Flag– on a literal level, it is just a flag, a piece of cloth. However, it also stands for this particular country, for freedom, etc. What about the others?

4 Symbolism notes Think of another familiar symbol. Sketch it, and tell what it symbolizes. OR, think of a symbol that represents you. Sketch it, and explain why it symbolizes you.

5 Symbolism notes In writing, symbolism is the use of a word, a phrase, or a description, which represents a deeper meaning than the words themselves. This kind of extension of meaning can transform the written word into a very powerful instrument.

6 Verisimilitude Verisimilitude--Where the events in a story seem like they could really happen or be true. (Here’s a trick: Very Similar to Real Life!!!) Consider realistic situations & dialogue, historical events, relatable characters, etc. when deciding whether or not a story can exhibit verisimilitude.

7 “The Flowers” Read “The Flowers,” filling out the guided reading as you go.

Get out a sheet of paper. Write the above heading and today’s date at the top. After we are done, put these in the Notes section of your binder

9 What do you associate with the words that describe the rose?
What do you think the noose represents or symbolizes in the story? Why? Describe the placement of the noose in relation to the rose. Why is the placement significant? What do you think the rose represents or symbolizes in the story? Why? Myop discovers the body, the noose, and the rose after she spends the afternoon wandering off the usual path she would have traveled with her mother.
